Brief Summary of Work for this Position

UNCW is wrapping up the public phase of a $125 million comprehensive campaign, and the Office of Annual Giving is growing its team to better serve the needs of University Advancement. The Associate Director of Annual Giving will serve as a trusted partner to the Director of Annual Giving and will be responsible for managing many of the day-to-day operations of a centralized annual giving program. UNCW's Office of Annual Giving is an industry leader known for its innovative strategies, collaborative spirit, and donor-centric approach. This role will help design and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that will increase private support from alumni, parents, friends, and the campus community, including employees and students.

This position will be directly responsible for developing and executing multi-channel solicitation strategies, as well as helping to track results of annual giving campaigns and solicitations. The Associate Director will also supervise two full-time Assistant Directors.

This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging leader to play an active role in designing strategies that support UNCW's philanthropic priorities and align with campaign goals to include increasing participation among the university's 100,000 alumni.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 4 years of development experience with a focus on annual giving or direct marketing experience with demonstrable results
  • Ability to set, track, and analyze progress toward annual goals
  • Ability to interpret complex data to guide strategic decisions
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • A commitment to understanding industry trends and best practices and implementing program changes, when necessary
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong judgment and code of personal ethics
  • Ability to operate effectively, flexibly and collegially in a complex organizational environment
  • Ability to lead and empower staff to meet both individual and team goals

  • Higher education experience

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Division for University Advancement is responsible for the following primary goals:

  1. Coordinate a campus-wide, comprehensive effort to raise philanthropic funds that support the strategic plan and mission of the university.
  2. Manage an inclusive alumni engagement program designed to serve and engage nearly 100,000 alumni as ambassadors, advocates and donors.
  3. Strengthen and expand UNCW's donor pipeline through effective discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
  4. Ensure that external boards ( UNCW Foundation Board, Board of Visitors, Student Aid Association Board, Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Friends of UNCW) are effective in their mission of supporting UNCW.

The division's fundraising efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with the campus community as well as external constituents including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, volunteers and friends. Development areas include annual giving, leadership annual giving, major gifts, principal gifts, corporate and foundation engagement and planned giving, as well as alumni engagement. Prospect development, events and board management, stewardship, communications and advancement services are support services for the fundraising activities of the division.
