Armed Forces Retirement Home Advanced Practice Nurse (Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner) in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary This position is located in the Health Care Services, Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH), at Washington DC. The mission of AFRH is to provide residences and related services for certain retired and former members of the US Armed Forces. Responsibilities As an Advanced Practice Nurse (Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner), you will: - Perform psychiatric and medical assessment to obtain biopsychosocial and medical history, mental status, and risk factors - Assess for psychiatric conditions including homicidal and suicidal ideations and facilitate care if indicated to include involuntary hospitalization when resident is deemed a threat to self or others, and if clinically indicated to preserve the safe of self and others - Possess understanding of the concepts of substance use disorders. Initiate counseling and motivation strategies individualized for the patient and collaborate with interdisciplinary team to facilitate success in managing substance used disorders. - Collaborate with physicians and nurse practitioners when indicated. May serve as alternate to unit physician or nurse practitioner in his/her absence or as assigned. - Participate in after hours on call assignments. Requirements Conditions of Employment The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Qualifications You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Specialized experience is one year (52 weeks) of experience at the GS-11 level, or equivalent that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes: - Diagnosing, treating, and evaluating psychiatric illnesses, non-life threatening acute and chronic illnesses and disease; AND -Obtaining medical histories using different assessments such as Patient Healthcare Question (PHQ-9), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and conducting physical examinations; AND - Ordering, performing, and interpreting basic diagnostic studies; AND - Prescribing medications; AND - Collaborating with physicians and other health professionals as needed. SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired. LICENSURE: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. You must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. ADDITIONAL LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. Education Education Requirements: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. Areas of specialties include Geriatric Psychiatry or other specialties identified for the position. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions. Selectees will be subject to the AFRH Tuberculosis Surveillance Program. Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc. Because the AFRH's mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
