This position will train and certify school bus drivers in the classroom and behind the wheel. It is responsible for teaching safe driving procedures for school bus driver defensive driving courses, driver improvement clinics and other safety programs. It will conduct vision and medical screenings for driver education classes. It will provide training and certification for commercial driver training instructors. It also inspects commercial driver training schools and vehicles for compliance with state and county laws. It also investigates complaints involving commercial driver training schools. This position completes required weekly reports to be submitted to central office. It is also responsible for compiling and maintaining all work-related reports and files.

The Program area for this position includes Training and Teaching, Auditing, Bus Driving, working knowledge of DMV or Federal computer programs and/or Inspecting Vehicles for CDL Law.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience providing instruction in a classroom setting

  • Experience developing or revising lesson plans

  • Experience completing and maintaining reports and/or files

  • Experience with Microsoft application

  • Experience examining and evaluating information and making determinations based on analysis of this information

  • Previously or currently possess a CDL B w/P (passenger) & S (School Bus) endorsements for at least 2 years

Physical ability to lift and carry equipment/supplies weighing approximately 50lbs. Must be able to stoop, bend and look under and climb in and out of school buses. Pre-employment drug testing required as a condition of employment. A release form (ALCDRG-01) and background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed during interview allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substance and alcohol testing No driver license suspensions or revocations within 5 yrs and no more than 5 active points**.

This position is considered “covered” under the REAL ID Act. Therefore, pursuant to 6 CFR, 37.45, the selected candidate will be required to undergo a background check which includes a name-based and fingerprint-based criminal history record check, prior to beginning employment. The candidate that is selected for the position will be given a conditional offer of employment that would allow him or her to begin work subject to the results of the background check. A cost will be associated with this process for new employees. No cost is associated with this process for existing DMV employees.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of experience related to the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
