The Division of Arts & Humanities at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Instructor of Arts Workshop (Open Rank). This position supervises all facets of the main Arts Workshop facility at NYUAD and supports the delivery of the curriculum as part of the academic support team for the Arts Programs.

The NYUAD Arts Center’s Arts Workshop is a highly capable fabrication studio that serves as both a multidisciplinary art workshop and a theater scene shop. The space houses materials and equipment supporting advanced woodworking, metalworking, and CNC machining. The shop serves as a hub for projects originating from a broad range of departments across the University. While primarily used to support curricular activities related to the Arts and Theater classes, the space also supports class projects in Interactive Media, Film and New Media, and Engineering, visiting Theater productions, student capstone projects, and faculty research projects.

The Instructor of Arts Workshop reports to the Technical Equipment Facilities Manager. They manage the day-to-day studio operations in the workshop and provide key technical, administrative,and academic support for courses and programming across the arts. This includes, but is not limited to : maintaining tools and equipment, ensuring stock of consumables, supporting and supervising students, supporting faculty, advising faculty in the design of new courses that rely on this resource, and supporting programming while continuing to develop and improve the space’s capabilities for both modern and traditional fabrication techniques. The Arts Workshop Instructor will also be expected to develop and conduct technical workshops and safety training seminars in and outside of classes for students, staff, and faculty. Topics include but are not limited to CAD/CAM theory and execution using various materials, metal fabrication techniques, and woodworking techniques. The Arts Workshop Instructor will also hire, manage, train, and supervise a team of Student Assistants to help with day-to-day operations of space. Further job description details as attached.

Duties

General:

  • Act as first point of contact for the Arts Workshop at NYUAD

  • Manage day to day operations of the shop

  • Maintain and improve the Scene Shop across all of its disciplines and capabilities

  • Cultivate an environment of collaboration, shop etiquette, and safety

  • Assist university stakeholders in the completion of projects related to the scope of work of the Arts Workshop

  • Hire and supervise Student Assistants to help with day-to-day operations

    Technical:

  • Manage and maintain all shop equipment and related accessories and consumables, perform light equipment repairs and coordinate heavy repairs

  • Perform safety inspections of tools and equipment on a regular basis

  • Monitor tool and equipment usage to ensure proper technique and safe use

  • Calibrate equipment to meet high professional standards, ensuring prompt and proper repair of equipment when needed

  • Sourcing and purchasing tools and raw materials from local and international vendors

  • Design and fabricate projects for stakeholders across the university

    Academic:

  • Act as an integral member of the academic support team for the Arts programs and The MFA in Art and Media.

  • Support the annual fall production of the Theater program

  • Academically support classes through training workshops and student consultations

  • When appropriate, offer supplemental workshops on shop safety, tool use, fabrication processes or other topics that may interest students and the NYUAD community at large

  • More broadly, support all educational needs of the Arts and Humanities facilities and faculty

    Operational:

  • Coordinate space use between departments to accommodate class and research activities

  • Supervise student assistants and other technicians

  • Maintain a clean and highly functional workshop

  • Asset management and inventory recording

  • Liaise with Arts leadership on shop workflow and policy

  • Act as liaison between different stakeholders, such as faculty, Arts leadership, researchers, Arts Center production staff and other arts instructors

  • Actively promote wider access to and exploitation of the shop facilities

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in technical direction, fine art, theater, engineering, education, or related field

  • Extensive experience managing a multidisciplinary workshop in an educational setting

  • Experience conducting tool trainings to groups of end-users

  • Hands-on experience conducting machine maintenance, purchasing of machine consumables and repair parts, and sourcing raw materials

  • Excellent knowledge of design and fabrication techniques across a broad range of materials, with a strong emphasis on woodworking and metal fabrication

  • Proven skills in CAD/CAM/CNC design and programming

  • Experience with shop safety program implementation and enforcement

  • Experience with scenic design and/or art fabrication is a plus

  • Regional experience within the GCC is a plus

  • Excellent planning skills, managing competing demands on resources, personal, and space, while at the same time exhibiting patience and flexibility in dealing with changing priorities
