Summary This position is located in Wolf Trap National Park for Performing Arts. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 05/17/2024 whichever comes first. Responsibilities The major duties of the Gardener position include, but are not limited to, the following: Prunes and trims trees and shrubs to obtain the shape, size and desired growth characteristics, and to remove diseased limbs or excess branches. Computes quantities of plants, seeds, and other materials needed for specific areas. Cuts grass and trims hedges using either hand or power equipment. Determines when plants need additional watering and how long they should be watered. Fertilizes, waters, and seeds turf areas, and removes rocks, leaves, trash and debris from landscaped areas. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Work demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. Physical Demands: The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping. The incumbent occasionally climbs ladders to prune or trim vegetation and lifts heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer, grass seed, etc. Working Conditions: The work is done outside or in a greenhouse. In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the sun, and sometimes in chilly or rainy weather. On a regular basis the conditions will involve working in are contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being applied to trees and shrubs. The incumbent will be required to wear protective clothing during pesticide/herbicide application; as well as normal safety items such as gloves, boots, glasses, etc. Because of the duties performed there is the change of minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes and occasional possibility of broken bones from falls. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.
