Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in plumbing and/or steamfitting work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course in the plumbing and/or steamfitting trade. Applicants must submit evidence of qualifications. Applicants must possess a valid New York State driver's license and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Applicants must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population. This position is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check; this position may require annual checks. Preferred Qualifications:Certification and experience with sprinkler and/or standpipe system maintenance and inspections is a plus. Experience in the testing and maintenance of backflow prevention devices is a plus.
Duties Description This semi-skilled position shall be assigned to the Facilities' Mechanical Trades department. The person shall have a variety of duties within that department, such as:Perform skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, alteration, and installation activities in the plumbing and steamfitting trade. Use the tools of the plumbing and steamfitting trade, including the standard hand tools, portable power tools, and shop equipment. Perform repairs and maintenance on piping systems by cutting, bending, threading, and assembling pipe, and by soldering and caulking leaks and broken pipes. Open clogged drains with appropriate tools. Repair leaky valves, taps, and fixtures. Cut holes in walls and flooring for pipes to pass. Have an understanding and working knowledge of hot water heating systems, control devices, and plumbing code regulations. Have the ability to train and supervise sub-ordinate staff. Have the ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.Have the ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.Have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.Troubleshoot work orders related to plumbing, fire suppression, and mechanical equipment in dormitories and academic buildings. Install, maintain, and repair boilers, hot water heating systems, and control devices. Inspect mechanical equipment, prepare and maintain inspection reports, and estimate repairs. Coordinate with plumbing and mechanical contractors on critical maintenance projects.Other reasonable duties as assigned.
