The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is searching for an Academic Advisor to advise undergraduate students majoring and minoring in English, Creative Writing and English education. They will work with the senior advisor on student recruiting and retention.
Duties & Responsibilities
Advising
- Advise all English, Creative Writing, and English Education majors and minors, inter-college transfers, and external transfers.
- Participate in summer registration programs (from late May through early July) aimed at new incoming students.
- Work with LAS advisors to monitor students\' progress toward completing General Education, foreign language, and major requirements.
- Participate in retention efforts, including special advising for students on academic probation.
- Discuss and promote internships, graduate and professional programs and career development with undergraduates.
- Serve as LAS 299 advisor, evaluating work done and Study Abroad programs for equivalency or elective credit at the University of Illinois.
- Serve as primary liaison with the English Student Association, assisting with student publications and events.
- Assist with departmental events aimed at undergraduates such as welcome gatherings, information sessions, and resource fairs.
- Provide support for departmental publications and communication to undergraduate majors, ie the advising website, blog and social media.
- Maintain an awareness of university and community resources available to undergraduates in dealing with a wide range of emotional, physical, financial and academic difficulties.
Recruitment and Outreach
- Work with the senior advisor on outreach to prospective students and participate in recruitment and yield activities.
- Coordinate with other advisors on campus to promote and support undergraduate interest in the humanities.
- Represent the department to prospective students and their parents at events such as IlliniFest and Admitted Student Days.
Assessment and Curriculum
- Serve as a member of the departmental curriculum committee.
- Assist the senior advisor in managing enrollments for English and creative writing courses.
- Assist with ongoing departmental self-assessment by helping to administer student surveys, focus groups, etc.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor\'s degree in English, Creative Writing or related field.
- One (1) year of professional experience or two (2) years of graduate work experience working directly with students in secondary or higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master\'s degree in English, Creative Writing, Higher Ed, or similar.
- At least one year of full-time professional experience in academic advising/counseling, student coaching, or teaching of life skills.
- Experience advising students who are not making adequate academic progress in their major or toward their degree/diploma.
- Experience working with student transition and/or retention programs.
- Experience designing and facilitating student success workshops and activities.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Zoom, web and social media, Banner, and degree audit systems.
