Maintaining and protecting the safety and health of BNL employees, the public, and the environment is our mission. Our Industrial Hygiene group and staff provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by assisting in the implementation of the Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) Industrial Hygiene program.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Serve as the Supervisor of the Industrial Hygiene Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Responsible for overseeing the chemical and biological monitoring programs, ergonomics program, as well as chemical management program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (bulleted)
Reporting to the Safety and Health Services Division Manager, the Industrial Hygiene (IH) Program Supervisor will have the responsibility to:
Oversee chemical and biological exposure monitoring programs as well as the chemical management program.
Propose and lead the implementation of programs to protect employee health and implement ergonomics.
Conduct regular audits, surveillances, and assessments of programs, both as defined and as needed.
Ensure all relevant SBMS documentation is updated and in line with external standards.
Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for related IH topics such as inhalation and dermal hazards, exhaust ventilation, etc.
Maintain current knowledge of occupational health and safety regulation including ACGIH TLVs and OSHA/DOE PEL standards.
Supervise the activities of the IH Laboratory which includes keeping equipment maintained and calibrated.
Assist in the identification of industrial hygiene hazards and provide recommendations on controls to safety staff.
Perform quality control and assurance review of data generated by contract laboratories and field measurements.
Perform review and approval of qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments.
Collaborate with line organizations to integrate industrial hygiene practices into daily operations, support hazard assessments, and provide controls recommendations.
Work closely with the occupational medical clinic to support medical surveillance programs and manage IH-related incidents such as STS and heat stress injuries.
Manage contracts for laboratory services which includes proposal development, contract reviews, and invoice approvals.
Maintain and open and productive relationship with DOE BHSO counterparts.
Support the on-call IH Emergency Response Teams for the Laboratory Emergency Response Organization and maintain assignments.
Promote the use of and demonstrate support of Laboratory Operations in chemical and physical hazard assessment and safety.
Serve as back-up for the IH Laboratory staff.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Sciences or related health and safety field and a minimum of seven (7) years' progressively responsible related work experience which demonstrates advanced capabilities and use of sophisticated engineering approaches.
Knowledge of OSHA/ACGIH regulations with IH impacts.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Possession of a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
Willingness to obtain and maintain related professional certifications such as ASP, CSP, CIH.
Must demonstrate the ability to present ideas and concepts orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner to communicate technical information and interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding including senior management, engineers, scientists, and trade workers.
Must be a positive driver for change regarding BNL's commitment to safety and compliance.

Willingness and aptitude to learn from our current Safety staff and to be a team player.
Solid safety-based reasoning skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (bulleted)
Master's degree or Ph.D. in a scientific discipline.
10 (ten) years' progressively responsible related work experience which demonstrates advanced capabilities and use of sophisticated engineering approaches.
Previous supervisory experience.
Prior experience working at a DOE facility.
Working knowledge of 10CFR851.
Knowledge of ACGIH controls and recommendations.
Knowledge of Open Range Software.
Demonstrated experience in cross-functional collaboration, including working with occupational medical clinics, line management, and safety professionals to promote workplace safety.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $111300 - $140000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
