Position Summary: The Bridge Design Engineer will be responsible for engineering design of bridge and transportation structures of varying complexity using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments. The Bridge Design Engineer will receive general supervision from the Project Manager and Professional Engineers.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Structural analysis and design computations for bridges (steel plate girders, precast concrete culverts, foundations, etc.), retaining walls, bridge repairs, and ancillary structures
- Preparation of structural plans and details in accordance with NJDOT and industry standards, using design software and drawing tools
- Perform alternative studies
- Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects
- Develop construction cost estimates
- Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
- Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality
- Construction submittal reviews, including RFIs and shop drawings
Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- 0-5 years of experience performing design of highway bridges and transportation structures
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from ABET accredited engineering program
- Proficient in discipline specific design software, including MicroStation or other drafting software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge of structural design principles for steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete for both superstructure and substructure components
Preferred Experience
- Engineer-in-training certification
- Related experience
- Familiarity with NJDOT and AASHTO LRFD bridge design requirements
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25lbs) may be required as needed.
