Major Responsibilities

  • Actsascrewchiefforengineeringsurveysandinperformingcalculations,integration ofdata,measurements,operation ofequipment, etc.Formatsdigitaldataanddevelopsbaseplan&profile.

  • Coordinatesfieldcrewactivitiesandworkinasafeandefficientmannerandplans,organizesandprioritizes workwithminimalsupervision.

  • Instructs,directsandtrainsstaffinallaspectsofengineeringsurveywork,methods,proceduresandoperations.

  • Conductsengineeringsurveys foravarietyofprograms andprojectspertainingtoCityfacilities andinfrastructureinaccordancewithCityofToronto"EngineeringSurveysStandards".

  • Preparesdraftsofdocuments,contracts,specificationsandgathersinformationandrelaystosupervisor,inspector,designerand/orthe project engineer, as required.

  • Searches,evaluatesandanalyzesdesigns,reports, specificationsandanydocumentationrelatedtoprojects.Indexes,filesandreferences engineering survey records.

  • Assistsinensuringprojectsarecarriedoutinaccordance withCityEngineeringStandards,specificationsandprocedures.

  • Conductsfieldinspectionsandevaluatesconditionoffacilities,includinghazardidentification.

  • Ensurestheuseofsafetyequipmentandadherencetosafetyproceduresandregulations byconformingtotherequirementsoftheOccupationalHealthandSafetyActandRegulations,otherrelatedHealthandSafetylegislationandCityofTorontoHealthandSafety Policies.

  • AssistsProjectEngineersandcarriesouttechnicalworkinsupportoftheplanning, design,constructionandinspection ofmunicipalinfrastructure.

  • SupportsandliaiseswithProjectEngineers,Inspectorsandcontractors.Checksandauditsconsultantandcontractor workforcompleteness,accuracyandcompliancewithCitystandards.

  • Operatesandmaintainsavarietyofmechanical,digital,analogue,wireless,computerizedandotherequipmentandsystems.

  • Makesarrangementstoensureappropriatemaintenanceofsurveyvehiclesandcontents.

  • PerformssurveyworkandpreparesandchecksdatausingComputerAssistedDesignandDrafting(CADD)inputinformation.

  • Providesprogressreportsonworkandcompletestimesheetsandattendancereports.

  • Performsandchecksmanualandcomputerized calculations(e.g.controlpoints,traverses,centerlines,gradesandelevations).

  • Investigatesandrespondstoinquiriesfromthepublic,surveyors,consultantsandcontractors relatedtoconstructionactivityandengineering survey issues.

  • Evaluatesandsuggestsremedialactionwhensurveyrelatedconstructionproblemsoccur.

  • Prepares,readsandinterprettechnicaldrawings.

  • Finalizes fieldnotesandsurveyreportsforpreparationofplansanddesigns.

  • Searches,evaluatesandanalyzesexistingengineering records,notesandplans,andgathersinformationandrelaystosupervisor,inspector, designerand/ortheprojectengineer.

  • Determinessurvey procedurestobeused.Makescalculations torunbothopenandclosedtraverselines.Effectivelyperforms complexsurveyworkfortopographic,pre-engineeringdatacollection,constructionlayouts,audits,stake-outs,as-builtsurveys,hydrographicsoundingsandcontrolnetworkmaintenance.Recordsandmakesdetailedfieldnotesofsame.

Key Qualifications:

  1. GraduateinSurveying,GeomaticsorCivilEngineeringTechnologyORtheapprovedequivalentcombinationofeducationandexperience.

  2. ExperienceasaprojectleadanddirectinganengineeringsurveyfieldcrewonMunicipalinfrastructureconstructionprojects.

  3. Considerableexperience utilizingautomated fieldandoffice technology,such asmanual calculationsoffielddata,fieldworkdata management,fieldsurveysoftware,coordinategeometrysoftware,datadownloadingsoftware,wordprocessing,spreadsheetsand databases.

  4. ConsiderableexperienceconductingengineeringsurveysusingtotalstationsandGlobalNavigationSatelliteSystems(GNSS)equipment.

  5. MustpossessaDriver'sLicense, Class"G"orbetter, validintheProvince ofOntario andbeable tomaintainsame.Abilitytomaintain a valid City of Toronto Operator's Permit.

You must also have:

  • Thoroughknowledgeofthetheoryofengineeringsurveying,EngineeringSurveyStandardsandskilledinitsapplications.

  • Abilitytoprocessinformationfromsurveyequipment,includinganunderstandingofCADDprinciples.

  • Knowledgeoftheprinciplesofengineering technologies.

  • Abilitytooperatesurveyequipment(e.g.handheldcomputers,robotictotalstations,globalnavigationsatellitesystems,electronicmeasuringdevices,theodolites,levelsandrelatedequipment).

  • Abilitytoprovidedirection,organizeandscheduleactivitiesofasurveycrew.

  • Abilitytoperformmanualandcomputerizedmathematicalcalculationsusedinengineeringsurveying.

  • Abilitytoproducelegibleandaccurateengineeringfieldsurveynotesandproduceplotplans.

  • Abilitytoreadandinterprettechnicaldrawings,plansandrecords.

  • Abilitytocommunicate, bothorallyandinwriting,withthepublic,consultants,engineeringstaffandotherrepresentatives.

  • UnderstandingoftheOccupationalHealth&SafetyAct,andregulationsthatapplytothiswork.

  • Physicalabilitytodrivestakes,liftmaintenanceholecovers,carryequipmentandsuppliesandworkinconfinedspaces.

  • Abilitytoprioritizedifferentprojectsinabusyenvironment.

  • Abilitytoworkwellinateam
