The opportunity

The Counsel role provides robust legal analysis, advice and counsel/representation before the courts or various authorities to support different areas of the business within John Hancock and Manulife respectively.

Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice to Manulife and its affiliated companies

• Manage and Supervise the Legal department in Japan

• Advise the company of known risks and assess and report to the appropriate Company officers as to whether those risks are appropriately identified, assessed, monitored and reported

• Engage outside counsel (when necessary and appropriate) after obtaining the necessary approvals, and manage the process of selecting, hiring, monitoring, paying and providing guidance and direction to such outside counsel.

• Provide assistance with respect to complex legal, regulatory and compliance matters

• Responsible for drafting and reviewing of legal documents and communications

• Monitor legislative, regulatory and industry developments, and providing updates to BUs with respect to same

• Participate in industry conferences, presentations, committees and working groups

• May lead legal research projects/initiatives

• Provide any other legal advice that management may require

Job Requirements:

• Minimum 6 years of prior proven experience with major law firm and/or corporation

• Experience with and knowledge of the legislative frameworks

• Very strong written and verbal communication skills

• Strong influencing and organizational skills

• Tactful and operates with discretion

• Ability to quickly identify legal problems/risk
