JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Electrical and Protections & Controls Engineer Specialist .   

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN Timmins, ON.

Reporting to the Production Supervisor – Technical - Northeast, this position is responsible to provide electrical/protection & control engineering technical support for the continuous safe and efficient operation of OPG’s Northeast Operations. This role is based in the regional office; however, it will primarily support RG's Monitoring and Diagnostic (M&D) initiatives, with any additional capacity to support local operational needs.

*KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES *

  • Plan, co-ordinate and conduct capital and OM&A work projects related to the effective and efficient long-term viability of hydroelectric facilities.

  • Provide technical advice and guidance to OPG plant staff and others (both internal and external) involved in projects, assessments, and maintenance.

  • Conduct site investigations as necessary. Analyze previous engineering data relative to engineering design and recommend action.

  • Duties of automation project integration planning, design and construction, and commissioning and start-up.

  • Identifying automation and process technology opportunities for improvement and replicate newer control processes or other approved control processes.

  • Programming of control applications for various control systems.

  • Identify and conduct the engineering and financial evaluation of alternatives and prepare recommendations on repair, replace, upgrade or modification procedures.

  • Conduct the preparation of written requests for Capital Construction and OM&A work, including business case summaries complete with economic, technical, and environmental evaluations.

  • Design electrical and Protections and Controls (P&C) equipment and systems to meet client performance expectations and comply with safety and engineering standards. Provide authorized engineering approvals in accordance with applicable legislation.

  • Manage to successful completion assigned multiple, short, and long-term projects from concept to in-service, which are related to rehabilitation, replacement or upgrade of electrical and P&C equipment and systems.

  • Investigate and analyze protective device operations/mis-operations, system events; recommend, and implement solutions compliant with NERC BES requirements.

  • Track, develop and issue procedures, directives, standards, and bulletins relating to electrical maintenance work, and regulatory requirements. Pursue and follow-up implementation and adherence.

  • Conduct the preparation of inspection and maintenance procedures and standards.

  • Conduct field inspections to observe, investigate, evaluate, and report on plant conditions. Respond to emergency or short notice situations and provide timely advice/solutions.

  • Investigate new technologies, equipment, and methods for use in the maintenance and capital work program.

  • Design, develop, test, and modify tools or other devices to improve methods, procedures, and productivity.

  • Conduct the preparation of technical specifications for new and replacement equipment.

  • Review tenders submitted for maintenance, rehabilitation or upgrading work and submit recommendations.

  • Conduct engineering studies, assessments and investigations of general, unusual problems or developments of an electrical nature relative to hydroelectric facilities.

  • Support field projects in the provision of specialized advice, guidance and procedures as requested involving testing, inspection, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation and return to service of electrical and P&C equipment.

  • Participate in technical and material committees as required.

  • Deal with suppliers, manufacturers, labour representatives and government agencies on technical, commercial, and regulatory issues.

  • Work in partnership with other departments to ensure timely and effective product delivery.

  • Periodically act as supervisor of staff designated to assist on specific projects, or supervise, on a limited basis, staff assigned for continuous work programs.

  • Maintain a focus on continuous improvement of the business, including a knowledge of technological developments, practices and related experience which add value to the business.

  • Maintain a continuous surveillance of developments in the hydroelectric industry to ensure that relevant technologies, procedures, and methods to ensure continuous improvement of the business.

EDUCATION

  • University Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (with a focus on Computer Science and/or Management Information Technology Systems)

  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 8-10 years of relevant engineering experience.

  • Working experience with software associated with electrical engineering including but not limited to EasyPower and PSS/E;

  • Programming and configuring SCADA software packages, PLC platforms, Microsoft Operating Systems, OPC , SQL, and OLE clients and servers.

  • Working with real-time systems such as Energy Management Systems (EMS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), DMS (Distribution Management Systems) and RTU protocols (DNP3, Harris, Modbus, Modbus+)

  • An engineering background in design/operation of major electrical facilities with particular emphasis to the variety of electrical equipment/systems associated with hydroelectric facilities;

  • Knowledge and experience with utility protection systems, microprocessor relays systems, protection logic, sequence components,

  • Requires knowledge and experience with electrical power systems and P&C engineering design, modification or replacement of power distribution systems, major electrical equipment, hydroelectric plant protection, control and automation including preparation of specifications and providing study and release estimates.

  • Knowledge and experience with hydroelectric plant electrical drawings including elementary wiring and connection wiring diagrams. 

  • Knowledge and experience with the procurement of engineering services and materials including the creation of design-build, design-bid-build and material specifications.

  • Knowledge and experience with the operation of the Ontario Electricity Markets including the regulatory requirements of the Transmission Operator and the System Operator.

  • Knowledge and experience of Electrical Power System Operations including generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

  • Strong verbal and written communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Results and detail oriented individual;

  • High integrity, upholding the company’s values and behaviors including Health & Safety, and protection of the environment.

  • Valid Class G Ontario driving license (or equivalent) in good standing.

  • Willingness to travel via road, airplane, float plane, helicopter etc. 25% of time;
