Examples of Duties

• Maintains city property including mowing, trimming and edging, fertilizing, watering lawns and other landscaped areas and removing graffiti.

• Applies pesticide and fertilizer for turf, shrubs and trees. Ensures property landscaping is maintained at high standards.

• Performs technical landscape duties, including planting and trimming flowers, shrubs, and trees.

• Maintains city property in a clean and safe condition, including trash pick-up and receptacle maintenance, leaf removal, pressure washing, and other outdoor maintenance needs.

• Participates in installing and repairing irrigation equipment, including installing irrigation pipes, valves and controls, testing systems and performing repairs and preventive maintenance.

• Assists in maintaining and repairing City facilities, equipment, buildings and grounds by performing a wide variety of carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing and landscaping repair work.

• Sets up rooms and equipment as needed; moves and arranges furniture.

• May assist in performing a variety of tasks such as interior painting, door locks, padlocks repairs, and re-keying, replace plumbing fixtures, including sinks, toilets, faucets, and pipes: clearing obstructions from water and sewer lines, change lamps, replace switches, motion sensors, various indoor and outdoor light fixtures and receptables.

• Operates, maintains, and repairs a range of light equipment, mechanical tools, and power tools, including trucks, boom trucks, scissor lifts, forklifts, tractors, and riding mowers. Uses testing instruments and various hand tools required for the job. Adjusts to changing situations and circumstances as they arise.

• Maintains accurate records, orders supplies, parts, and materials, and picks up parts as necessary.

• Able to read and interprets technical manuals, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints to facilitate installation, servicing, repair, and replacement activities.

• Monitors contractors working in and around buildings and facilities to ensure their work meets City standards.

• Responds to customer complaints and inquiries regarding facilities and buildings.

• Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.

• Maintains public facilities, shop areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.

• Maintains accurate computerized logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used; prepares reports as required.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of:

• The operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and power equipment.

• Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

• Basic arithmetic related to construction and reading a tape measure.

• Safe work methods and safety practices pertaining to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals, and pesticides

• Record keeping principles and procedures.

• Computer applications related to the work.

• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public and City staff, in person and over the telephone.

Ability to:

• Perform a variety of landscaping tasks in the maintenance, renovation, repair of City grounds and properties.

• Perform a variety of technical tasks in the construction, maintenance, renovation, and repair of City buildings and facilities.

• Perform basic preventative maintenance of equipment and tools.

• Skillfully and safely operate a variety of light equipment and power and hand tools used in carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and construction work.

• Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.

• Read, interpret, and comprehend construction drawings, specifications, plans, manuals, diagrams, blueprints, and technical regulations.

• Coordinate work assignments with other divisions and departments.

• Conduct safety inspections and establish safe procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade; and

  • One (1) year of skilled landscape maintenance or construction work.

Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving history.

Supplemental Information

Union Representation: SEIU

Work Schedule: Monday to Thursday: 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, Friday: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm with every other Monday off.

Important Must pass CJIS background check to escort vendors to secured areas.
