We seek a Full-Time Communication Specialist to join the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston, TX. You will help develop and create high-quality, creative materials in this position. This includes print, electronic, and social media collateral, publications and reports, marketing materials, and articles. This position will support the Texas CARES project, a statewide longitudinal project that seeks to understand the human antibody response to SARS-CoV-2, and the All for Them project, a multilevel, multi-component, school-based vaccination initiative.

Position Summary:

This position will split effort 50/50 between the following two projects:

Texas CARES is a statewide longitudinal project that seeks to understand the human antibody response to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This initiative is a partnership among UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, The University of Texas System, and the Texas Department of State Health Services. All for Them is a multilevel, multi-component, school-based vaccination initiative funded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. All for Them implements evidence-based approaches to increase HPV vaccine uptake among medically underserved adolescents in Texas. Strategies include a social marketing and educational campaign, comprehensive vaccination clinics in partner school districts, and school nurse education. This position is responsible for creating and maintaining marketing and communications deliverables that effectively describe and promote Texas CARES and All for Them, including graphics, written content, collateral, and other promotional products.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Gathers information, generates ideas and develops and influences the creation of high-quality, creative materials and programs.

  • Gathers information through research and interviews with faculty, staff, and other appropriate sources, such as project participants, with consideration for sensitivity and HIPAA requirements.

  • Generates ideas for communication strategies and develops related promotional plans, tactics, and materials.

  • Develops and executes social media strategy, including corresponding written, graphic, and/or video content.

  • Consistently creates, updates, and maintains clear and compelling internal and external web content through collaboration with team members and regular proactive, independently conducted audits.

  • Uses desktop publishing software to create various print and electronic publications, such as compelling reports for participants or stakeholders, executive summaries, white papers, project updates, infographics, and email marketing initiatives.

  • Designs marketing materials used for external advertising and promotional events.

  • Assists with printing, assembly, and distribution of publications to partners, faculty, staff, and legislators.

  • Writes news/feature articles for publication.

  • Collaborates with UTHealth Houston Communications and Public Affairs, other Schools of Public Health, other UTHealth Houston schools, Texas Medical Center entities, and other similar institutions across Texas and beyond.

  • Collaborates with team members and/or other faculty/staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Certification/Skills:

Preferred:

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills

  • Content management system skills

  • Knowledge in producing well-written, creative copy with a strong background in AP style

  • Equally adept at working independently and collaborating with a team

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively to develop solutions and innovative ideas

  • Excels at time management and comfortable with shifting priorities and adapting to change

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and social media platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn

  • Experience with Meta Ads Manager and paid digital marketing

  • Experience in public health or governmental communications

  • Photography and video skills

  • Bilingual English and Spanish

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field.

Minimum Experience:

  • Three years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
