Pacific Lutheran University Human Resources Specialist (Student Employment) in Tacoma, Washington

Work Schedule:

Full-time; Monday -- Friday; 8am -- 5pm.

General Description:

The Human Resources Specialist oversees the on-campus student employment system and assists with on-campus work study. Reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a resource to employers and students by explaining campus policies and procedures in regards to student employment.
  • Communicate with on-campus employers about the process for posting positions and hiring students using the Opportunities Board utilizing Symplicity; troubleshoot any job posting or hiring issues.
  • Monitor and screen on-campus student employment data. Oversee the data entry for all student employment hires.
  • Supervise student workers in the input of detailed data entry.
  • Communicate with the Office of Financial Services on student eligibility and awards.
  • Communicate with payroll to ensure timely and correct data entry.
  • Coordinate the collection of W-4 and I-9 documentation; conduct student employee background and motor vehicle record checks.
  • Resolve data entry errors.
  • Attend events and tables throughout the year to provide information on student employment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive student and employer information.
  • Provide individual and group training.
  • Provide support for the staff employment process as needed.
  • Updated and maintaining the Student Employment website.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills. Ability to prioritize work to provide prompt and efficient support.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software applications.
  • Knowledge of ensuring compliance with US labor laws and  USCIS employment regulations.
  • Comfort with public speaking and leading trainings.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and as an integral part of a team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree OR 2 years of job-related experience. Education may substitute for some experience.
  • High school diploma or  GED.
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Familiarity with and/or experience in higher education.
  • Coursework or previous experience in Human Resources.
