The American Express Global Privacy Oversight are trusted advisors on the American Express Data Protection & Privacy Principles. We work to raise privacy awareness, drive compliance with both internal privacy policies and regulatory expectations across the organization and establish privacy as a strategic differentiator for the American Express brand.

As a second line of defense function, Global Privacy oversee, provide expertise in, and challenge the identification, management, and mitigation of privacy risks across the company in line with the privacy framework and the company’s vision to provide the world’s best customer experience every day.

The Vice President, U.S. & Institutional Privacy will provide oversight and credible challenge of the privacy risk-taking activities while leading a global team of privacy professionals responsible for independent privacy risk management for American Express’ U.S. Banks, Global Merchant & Network Services and Global Commercial Services.

The Vice President will oversee the business in support of privacy risk management objectives including regulatory compliance (e.g. CCPA, CPRA and GDPR), and monitor aggregate privacy risk across the company to ensure privacy risk profile remains within appetite and tolerance levels. Lead specialist functions overseeing Artificial Intelligence and Data Management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Privacy subject matter expert, current on industry activities and emerging trends, and familiarity with key regulations including GDPR and CCPA.

  • Experience providing credible challenge and ongoing second line oversight to pro-actively identify and address risks.

  • Exceptional knowledge of key privacy concepts including lawful usage, purpose limitation, minimization, retention and deletion requirements etc.

  • Experience working in a highly controlled environment and governing supporting policies and procedures

  • Experience leading the uplift and deployment of governance capabilities and frameworks supporting the privacy risk domain.

  • Detailed knowledge of operational processes required to support critical privacy requirements, e.g. data subject rights.

  • Champion for a consistently strong control environment, and ability to influence the continued enhancement of effective controls.

  • Familiarity with related risk types including AI, Data Risk and Information Security.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10 years’ experience in a Risk Management/Compliance/Audit role or a highly regulated domain.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of risk professionals to accomplish privacy risk management goals, best practices and risk mitigation strategies.

  • Ability to build rapport with First Line Business Units, risk oversight functions, compliance, operational excellence, information security, GCO and many others to drive privacy best practices throughout the enterprise.

  • Excellent relationship building skills to partner effectively across diverse, cross-functional teams in complex and rapidly-changing environments.

  • Experienced leader, able to engage and influence while motivating diverse teams through complexities and change to deliver results.

  • Outstanding problem-solving and analytical skills, with strong learning agility and willingness to embrace and lead through change.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, able to create compelling arguments and influence across all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven ability to communicate effectively.

  • Location: Hybrid (NYC, Phoenix, Sunrise or Atlanta)

Salary Range: $200,000.00 to $275,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
