As part of the Display and Optics organization at Meta Reality Labs, you will be responsible for overall design and development of core optical modules for future products, and will have the opportunity to be part of a team composed of some of the best engineers, scientists and leaders defining the field of AR/VR. There will be a strong emphasis on maturing optical designs and productization of first generation optical modules, as well as working with internal and external partners to lead product development, and ensuring successful integration with the rest of the system to guarantee customer-facing performance.

Required Skills:

Optical Systems Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Provide technical and strategic leadership to the team for overall hardware system design and execution, drive/prioritize all critical path activities to ensure successful hardware design and development.

  2. Lead the definition of hardware specifications and assess overall hardware performance through rigorous modeling, tolerance analysis and characterization. Drive critical optical module/system trade-off decisions prioritizing customer-facing requirements

  3. Create plans for design validation, learning cycles and module builds, and manage execution for the evaluation of prototype optical systems. Track plans with internal team members and communicate with stakeholders and leadership

  4. Collaborate with internal teams and external industry partners to develop and mature state-of-the-art technologies (e.g. optics, material, process, metrology, and design)

  5. Influence cross-functional teams to drive the development and delivery of first generation optical systems to life

  6. Build predictive optical models, validate designs and models with measured data to close the loop

  7. Support module build and system integration activities at external suppliers

  8. Support design validation, lab characterization and failure analysis of optical modules and systems

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 6+ years of experience in developing mass produced optical modules or systems in highly multidisciplinary environments, including setting specifications, determining test methods, and overall module and system integration.

  2. 6+ years of experience working with external vendors to deliver mass-produced custom optical components, modules, or systems, where challenging optical requirements drive new opto-mechanical integration and metrology techniques.

  3. Experience with one or more of the following optics domains: imaging optics, lens design, illumination, radiometry and photometry, geometric or physical optics, projector design, polarization optics.

  4. Experience with tolerance analysis of optical modules, and specification of optical tolerances for manufacturability.

  5. Experience working with optical design software such as Zemax, CodeV or Light-tools. Experience using scripting languages and data analysis tools such Matlab, Python or JMP.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. MS or PhD degree in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.

  2. Experience designing and modeling optical systems using tools such as Zemax, Code V or others

  3. Familiarity with display technologies such as OLEDs, LCDs, LCOS and uLEDs.

  4. Experience with multiple full life cycle product launches.

  5. Manufacturing and failure analysis experience for high-precision optical components and modules such as cameras, sensors, or illumination/projector systems.
