Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years of progressive full time experience in higher education which may include student activities, residence life, commuter student programming and/or administration. Experience with large scale programming and/or events. Supervisory experience. Experience with budget management. Experience working with a diverse student population.Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field. Additional years (6+) of progressive full time experience in higher education which may include student activities, residence life, commuter student programming and/or administration. Experience interacting with faculty, staff, and/or students. Experience with student club/organization advising and development. Experience working with students enrolled in healthcare related professions. Experience with web-based information systems, student databases, and/or scheduling programs.Brief Description of Duties:
In this inaugural role, the Director of Student Life for the Health Sciences Center (HSC) reports to the Associate Dean of Students in the Office of Student Life and is responsible for enhancing the overall educational experience of Stony Brook's East and South Campus students through the development of, exposure to, and participation in intellectual, cultural, artistic, social, multicultural, and community service programs. Specifically, the Director oversees and manages the daily Student Life operations, events, and programs on East and South Campus, including students enrolled in the:

  • Renaissance School of Medicine
  • School of Dental Medicine
  • School of Health Professions
  • School of Nursing
  • School of Social Welfare

The Director promotes student engagement, learning, and leadership development, and helps sustain a vibrant student life through the effective use of campus facilities and coordination of student programs. The Director supervises one professional staff member as well as graduate and undergraduate student assistants. The Director works with several departments that are part of the University's Student Life umbrella as well as several Student Affairs areas, including Student Health, Wellness, and Prevention Services and the Career Center in providing services, outreach, and assistance to students. The selected candidate works with a diverse student body and is expected to have strong analytical, organizational, and decision making skills.

  • Leadership, Administration, and Operations
    • The Director leads collaborative strategic planning efforts that support the University's vision and mission. The Director manages the daily operations of the HSC Office of Student Life and directly supervises a Coordinator for Student Life and hourly graduate and undergraduate student assistants. The Director leads the recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, supervision, and recognition of student staff across the department. The Director conducts regular supervision and staff meetings to provide direction, support, and development. The Director works collaboratively with the Deans and Assistant Deans of each school and college in implementing the overall Student Life program for the HSC. The Director plans, develops, and manages the annual budget and ensures financial accountability. The Director works collaboratively with the CRAFT Team (Communications, Research, Assessment, Fundraising, and Technology) on website development and communications.
  • Student Community and Engagement
    • The Director is invigorated by student engagement and brings passion to the work of helping create inclusive communities. The Director is a visible and accessible campus leader whose priorities are establishing and maintaining relationships with HSC undergraduate and graduate students and student groups. The Director coordinates assessment initiatives related to HSC students' academic and social needs, co-curricular involvement, campus climate, student learning, and student satisfaction. The Director provides advocacy, mentoring, and advice to HSC students, with emphasis given to promoting academic and personal success. The Director collaborates with Division of Student Affairs colleagues and others to ensure support for HSC students' growth and leadership development. The Director, in partnership with the Department of Student Engagement & Activities, leads student-focused initiatives, including events, programs, coaching, advising, and developing student clubs and organizations.
  • Campus Partnership and Engagement
    • The Director collaborates with the CRAFT Team and University partners to compile and analyze data and make data-informed recommendations in support of student success. The Director builds and maintains strong partnerships with various West campus offices, including many departments under the University's Student Life umbrella as well as other Student Affairs areas, including the Career Center, Center for Prevention & Outreach (CPO), Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Accessibility Support Center (SASC), Student Health Services, and Student Support Team. The Director meets regularly with campus partners to advocate for students' needs, stay informed of issues impacting students, and share information and outreach strategies to support and develop a positive campus climate and culture. The Director collaborates with University partners in developing and implementing workshops, initiatives, and services that promote students' awareness, knowledge, and skills in alignment with the mission and goals of Student Affairs.
  • Professional Development and University Engagement
    • The Director enhances professional skills by participating in opportunities that promote learning, growth, and development. The Director contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by outside areas. Examples include campus-wide traditions, events, programs, opening of school activities, admissions open houses, and collaborative partnerships across areas. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.
