Are you passionate about public health? Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking dedicated professionals to make a difference in our communities. As a Public Health Sanitarian Supervisor you will supervise the execution of the national regulatory food safety standardization activities throughout Minnesota to verify a highly trained, competent regulatory food safety workforce exists in all state and delegated food safety programs. Standardization of food inspection staff is a required element of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Ensure statewide MDH and delegated program standardized food safety inspection officers implement the FDA food code standardization program to ensure consistent code interpretation and enforcement.

  • Supervise activities related to EHS-Net (cooperative national project with CDC's National Center for Environmental Health and other state and local health departments), including analyzing and publishing data from studies looking at foodborne illness risk factors.

This position can be based out of St Paul or any of MDH’s district offices*, depending on which location is closest for the top candidate. There will be an option for some teleworking, however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion. Telework eligibility applies to applicants residing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota. *District Office locations: Bemidji, Duluth, Fergus Falls, Mankato, Marshall, Rochester or St Cloud.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a current Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) credential issued by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)

AND

  • Four (4) years of professional experience working as an environmental health specialist or sanitarian;

Candidates who hold a master's degree in environmental health, sanitary science, sanitary engineering, chemistry, biology, or other related environmental health field will receive credit for six (6) months of qualifying professional experience. Candidates who hold a doctoral degree in environmental health, sanitary science, sanitary engineering, chemistry, biology, or other related environmental health field will receive credit for twelve (12) months of qualifying professional experience.

AND

  • One year experience as a supervisor, team lead, OR project lead.

Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:

  • Demonstrated professional level experience with public health, environmental health, environmental hazards prevention, assessment and control of environmental risks, and continuous quality improvement processes.

  • Written communications skills sufficient to document concise, accurate and complete observations, provide information, answer questions, and emphasize critical issues.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly with owners, managers and employees and interviewing in a variety of environments, including while loud equipment is operating, in busy kitchens, and while employees are working.

  • Critical thinking skills sufficient to collect and analyze information, identify areas of focus, and make decisions based on evidence gathered.

  • Enforcing laws, rules, and regulations consistently and impartially.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health, environmental health, or related field.

  • Certification as an FDA Standardized Food Safety Inspection Officer.

  • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facilities Operator certification.

  • Experience managing multiple overlapping projects that engage a variety of stakeholders.

  • Experience implementing or auditing the FDA Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards

  • Knowledge of and experience interpreting and implementing federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to the regulation of food establishments, swimming pools, lodging facilities, manufactured home parks, recreational camping areas, and children’s camps.

  • Experience with the EHS-Net grant activities.

  • Valid Class D driver's license

Physical Requirements

  • Transport items weighing 20 pounds.

  • Move over uneven, sloping, and/or snow-covered ground.

  • Work outdoors in all seasons, with exposure to weather extremes.

Additional Requirements

  • This position requires successful completion of references and background check.

  • While a driver's license is not required, the position demands some travel, which the incumbent will be responsible for meeting.
