AAR JV Scientist II - 5031 / Stennis Space Center, MS in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi

This Position is for a Scientist II with a work location in Stennis Space Center, MS.

POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

The Scientist II will work as part of a team providing analytical support for environmental samples following EPA regulatory methods and guidelines. The Scientist II operates with a degree of independence under established policies and procedures.  Receives guidance from department lead, Scientist IV and/or Scientist III to assure coordination of efforts with other personnel. Candidate will be responsible for analyzing environmental samples for primarily organic contaminants utilizing laboratory instrumentation including High Pressure Liquid Chromatography(HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC)and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Responsibilities will include sample preparation including extractions, standard and reagent preparation and data review. Effectively participates in proficiency testing and maintains quality records as required. Must use judgment to evaluate and adapt laboratory requirements/guidelines to customer specifications and testing needs. Because of the critical nature of the support provided, extended working hours (including weekends and holidays) may be required.

Analyze samples for primarily organic contaminants using approved methods and techniques including extraction and use of HPLC, GC, GC-MS instrumentation.

Evaluation, method development and implementation of new methods according to customer requirements/requests.

Perform routine diagnosis, troubleshooting, light repairs and maintenance of analytical instrumentation.

Adheres to all guidelines established in EPA methods and laboratory standard operating procedures including active participation in quality control set forth in all.

Actively participates in contractor quality and safety program, conducts peer reviews.

Participates in providing innovative approaches to technical problems, contributes to the overall increase in lab efficiency through adaptive thought and information exchanges.

Guides and trains assigned personnel as required and advises supervisory personnel of their progress.

Responsible for review and generation of Standard Operating Procedures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor of Science degree with at least five years' experience conducting analysis of environmental samples.

Experience with maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation used for analysis of environmental samples.

Strong attention to detail, familiar with interpretation of EPA methodologies and documentation of processes.

Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems for data entry, processing and reporting

Professional knowledge of good laboratory practices, chemical principles, theories and established methodology sufficient to perform analyses on a wide variety of environmental samples.
