Angus Genetics Inc. Geneticist in St. Joseph, Missouri
Angus Genetics, Inc. (AGI) seeks a Geneticist in St. Joseph, MO to provide analytical support, statistical analyses and genetic research support to the Angus Genetics team, as well as assisting in the implementation of genetic evaluation software along with genomic predictions with the Information Systems (IS) group.
The duties include:
- Provide general trouble-shooting and analyses in support of AGI's delivery of a weekly genomic evaluation including multiple breeds as well as genomic predictions of commercial animals;
- Maintain a general knowledge of all genetic evaluation and genomic preprograms and maintain familiarity with the traits evaluated as part of the genetic evaluation;
- Research new procedures, processes and techniques that will improve the genetic and genomic evaluation of economically relevant traits in beef cattle;
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of Animal Genetics and Breeding, including genetic evaluation and genomic prediction through participation in Internationally relevant meetings and meaningful interaction with colleagues around the world;
- Analyze high density genomic data Next Generation Sequencing data, and interact with public databases such as NCBI, DAVID and KEGG as appropriate;
- Interact with IS staff on a regular basis;
- Train and mentor interns in quantitative genetics and genomic analyses;
- Publishing scientific articles is encouraged;
- Ensure the protection of company intellectual property; and
- Other duties as assigned.
We require a Master's degree in Animal and Dairy Sciences, Animal Breeding, or Genetics. We also require three years conducting research in the field of quantitative genetics and genomics, including analyzing high density genomic data in a breeding context, helping industry collaborators troubleshoot genetic evaluations and implementation of new tools and methodology, and use of statistical software and programming languages including BLUPF90, R, SAS, Bash scripting, and Fortran. This experience must include writing and reviewing articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, and teaching experience regarding genetic selection and genomic analyses using BLUPF90.
May require minimal domestic travel (0-5%) to attend scientific conferences and interact with science collaborators, with the potential of an annual or bi-annual international trip for the World Angus Forum.
