Position: cashier clerk Department Treasurer Location: 227 W Jefferson Blvd. 2nd Fl South Bend IN 46601 Status: Full Time Salary: $18.53 hour $38,540 year Job Category: COMOT (Computer, Office Machine Operation, Technician FLSA Status: Non-exempt Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30 p.m. Description: This position is full time and is covered in the Saint Joseph County Employee Policy Manual. Incumbent serves as Cashier/Clerk for the St. Joseph County Treasurers Office, responsible for collection property taxes, processing a variety of paperwork, and assisting the public.

Essential Functions:

Answers telephone and responds to taxpayer inquiries, providing information and assistance and/or directing callers to appropriate individual or department. Greets and assists office visitors, responding to inquiries and printing/preparing tax bills for payment. Processes liquor license applications/renewals, verifying payment of personal property taxes. Sorts/distributes daily mail and processes payments received via mail. Prepares mobile home transfers, including running checks for judgments and back taxes owed, and typing mobile home permit forms as appropriate. Occasionally assist with bankruptcy notices and discharge papers and maintains accurate/organized records/files. Occasionally assists with garnishment of wages, including checking for delinquencies in property tax payments, preparing list, and printing report. Work in cashier section as needed, including receiving tax payments, balancing cash drawer, printing reports, and placing money and documents in vault as required.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. Must have the ability to pass a background and drug check. Job requirements and difficulty of work: Knowledge of state laws pertaining to tax collections and policies, practices, legal requirements of the department, with the ability to effectively respond to inquiries and apply appropriate procedures accordingly. Working knowledge of standard office procedures and computer software used by the Department, with the ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations. Ability to properly operate standard office equipment. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, title companies, mortgage companies and the public. Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect. Ability to understand, comprehend, memorize, retain, and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations, make simple arithmetic. Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often amidst frequent distractions and interruptions and on several tasks at the same time. Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, personal conduct and drug-free workplace. Ability to occasionally work extended, evening and or weekend hours only as needed.
