Job Title: Phlebotomist II
Job Description
The primary function of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture process clearly and courteously, and handling specimens accurately.
Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods clearly to patients.
Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Understand and follow physicians' orders accurately.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% accurate.
Package specimens for transport and store samples at the required temperature.
Follow specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
2-4 years of experience in phlebotomy required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with pediatric and geriatric care.
Customer service skills.
Knowledge of medical records and data entry.
Experience in administrative support and front desk operations.
Work Environment
The work environment is a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. You will use various equipment for blood drawing and specimen processing, including straight needles and butterfly needles. The role may require standing for long periods and wearing protective clothing as per OSHA and DEP regulations. The position includes handling phone inquiries and updating patient information using Microsoft Office Suite.
