Department of Defense Education Activity Mixed Teacher/Specialist Position in Sigonella Sicily, Italy

Summary About the Position: This position is located in the DoDEA Europe South District, Sigonella Elementary School in Sigonella, Italy. Federal employees in Sigonella are currently entitled to receive a 20% Post Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary. This vacancy announcement is open to all current, permanent DoDEA-Europe & DoDEA-Pacific Educators, which includes current, permanent educators in Cuba. DoDEA educators assigned to Americas and Guam should apply via EAS. Responsibilities Implement speech/language therapy services of the school. Administer diagnostic speech/language assessments for students suspected of having a disability. Administer screening tests for academic and behavioral concerns of referred students. Collaborate with classroom teachers to identify children at risk for literacy (reading/writing/math) difficulties. Current Competitive Service Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Civilian Employee Current Excepted Service Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Employee In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum Education Requirement: A baccalaureate degree. Academic preparation must have included at least 40 semester hours (SHs) in general education course work distributed over such fields as English, history, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, languages, science, philosophy, and psychology. In addition, academic preparation must have included a minimum of 18 SHs of professional teacher education course work in such areas as learning process, tests and measurement, educational philosophy, psychology, social foundations, methods of teaching and curriculum applicable to the type and level of the position. The course work must have been completed at or accepted by a regionally accredited U.S. college or university. AND Student Teaching or an Internship. Student teaching or an internship as part of an approved teacher education program in an accredited U.S. institution is required. In the absence of an approved student teaching or internship program, applicants may be given credit for one year of successful full-time employment as an educator. Since that one year of employment substitutes for a course, no credit may be given for pay purposes. AND 0420 - Elementary - Teacher: Mildly to Moderately Learning Impaired: A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work may include diagnostic-prescriptive type instruction, curriculum-based assessment and instruction, remediation activities, educable mentally disabled and behavior disorders. AND 0472 - Teacher, Speech/Language Pathologist: A master's degree in speech/language pathology is required. Course work should include training in basic audiology and speech disorders. A SLP license issued by a State Board of Health will be only be accepted IF the applicant has completed a SLP internship in a school setting OR they have 7+ years of SLP work experience in a school setting. Otherwise, the Praxis I tests are required OR the applicant must obtain a SLP license issued by a State Board of Education. Professional Licensure/Certification Requirement: Applicants must be currently certified or certifiable under the current DoDEA standards as an Elementary Teacher: Mildly to Moderately Learning Impaired (0420) and Teacher, Speech/Language Pathologist (0472). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Flexibility Leveraging Diversity Problem Solving Technical Credibility Education Foreign Degrees and Course Work from Non-accredited Institutions. Foreign Degrees and Course Work from Non-accredited Institutions. Credits or degrees earned from a foreign college or university must be evaluated prior to acceptance. Three evaluation procedures are acceptable: a. The work must be evaluated and interpreted by a current member of National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). This website provides a list of current organizations who can perform your evaluation. You must select and work directly with one of these organizations. b. The foreign institution that awarded the degree is on a list endorsed by a regionally accredited university or on a list endorsed by a state department of education for the purpose of teacher certification in that state (this procedure will require an English translation of the transcript and a copy of the document awarding the degree, together with an authenticated list produced by an American university or a state department of education); and c. The work may be evaluated by the graduate division of a regionally accredited university and declared the equivalent of similar undergraduate or graduate work in a U.S. institution. Graduates of non-accredited institutions may have their undergraduate work validated by admittance to graduate school and completion of a minimum of 5 SH of credit in a regionally accredited graduate college. Additional Information Applicants must comply with the Exceptional Family Member Program requirements as outlined in the DoD Instruction 1315.19. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are not considered Ordinarily Resident under the applicable Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). An ordinarily resident is anyone who has lived in the host country longer than the allowed number of days without being a member of the forces assigned, civilian component or a family member of either the aforementioned or who has obtained a work permit for any duration. Ordinarily Resident restrictions apply and vary depending on the host nation. Pay retention may be offered to selected applicants for positions at overseas locations. Pay retention will not be offered as an incentive for employees moving between overseas positions. Applicants who have family members with special medical needs should ensure that prior to accepting a position overseas their family members' medical needs can be met. Access to care in a military treatment facility may not be available to civilian employees except on a space available basis. Consequently, host nation medical facilities may be the only care available. The availability and level of care at host nation medical facilities will vary by location. Employees (and family members) who require medical or dental care in the overseas location will be responsible for obtaining and paying for such care. Access for civilian employees and their families to military medical and dental treatment facilities is on a space-available and reimbursable basis only. Medical and dental care may be provided by host nation providers. The availability and level of care at host nation medical and dental facilities will vary by location. Selectees initially recruited from the United States may receive certain foreign area benefits such as: Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) or government quarters, home leave, etc. (Subject to approval).
