POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs. It is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling more than 21,000 students at its three campuses in Selden, Brentwood, and Riverhead, as well as a Culinary Arts Center in downtown Riverhead.

Announcement is hereby made for a full-time, 12-month Assistant Director of Infrastructure Services position beginning immediately.

This is a Guild (Unit 4) position, and, as such, the salary and benefits for this position are determined according to the salary and benefits plan for the Guild of Administrative Officers.

The Assistant Director of Infrastructure Services will work with and lead a team responsible for the installation, configuration and maintenance of the Infrastructure for Suffolk County Community College. This team is also responsible for all services related to the phone system including voicemail, and call queues. Other responsibilities of the team include computer operations, management of the power systems sustaining the voice systems, management of the voice data center and virtual environment. In addition, the Assistant Director of Infrastructure Services will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues. The Assistant Director of Infrastructure Services will lead team members in the mission of the Department, the overall ITS structure and the college.

Job Description:

  • Assist the Administrative Director of Infrastructure Services by providing planning and status information on college infrastructure rooms and cabling, including recommendations for future growth in the convergence of voice, data and video networks to support new and growing academic incentives.

  • Oversee projects related to voice systems, cabling plant and emergency alerting as well as oversee the staff in these areas to ensure the systems remain relevant and meet the needs of the institution.

  • Maintain and report on day-to-day operations of the campus wiring closets including the coordination and review of upgrades, documentation of network infrastructure, and identification and analysis of equipment and electrical needs along with understanding the growth of the college’s educational network.

  • Oversee and assist with the installation and relocation of equipment supporting the network, and/or end-user equipment as directed including switches, routers, servers, telephones and digital signage on both the Academic and Administrative networks.

  • Planning and design of communications systems to include video conferencing, content delivery systems and emergency alerting systems.

  • Assist in trouble-shooting and repairing of college-wide telephone and network systems or devices.

  • Management of the power systems sustaining the voice systems.

  • Works with campus leaders and college leaders to ensure classrooms and office space needs are met in regard to connectivity, voice and delivery. Supervises staff as determined by the Administrative Director of Infrastructure Services.

  • Possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

  • All other duties assigned by the Administrative Director of Infrastructure Services that relate to the needs of the department and/or the needs of the college.

  • This position may require some evening and weekend work.

Required Competencies:

o Ability to work well under pressure, have excellent customer service skills, and be able to work collegially and effectively in a team environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technology or related field;

  • Three (3) years of professional experience supporting and maintaining Telecommunication systems with Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) systems;

  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience;

  • Three (3) years of professional experience supporting and maintaining Networking systems.

  • Experience with Virtual Ware systems and demonstrated knowledge of implementation and maintaining systems.

  • Experience with project management and cabling plant and demonstrated skills in the subject area.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree within accepted technology field.

  • Five (5) years of experience in maintaining and administering VoIP systems.

  • Experience working in a Higher Education environment.
