The Sr. System Planning Engineer for AWS Data Center Power Generation and transmission Infrastructure owns the successful delivery of the newest generations of data center energy innovations, and electrical power generation infrastructure technologies from concept to at-scale global implementation.

This role provides a unique opportunity to engage with advanced infrastructure solutions for HV/MV power systems and the exceptional people that develop them.

In this role you will be responsible for delivering large-scale critical HV/ MV projects in partnership with our commercial energy and procurement teams globally under tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate for this role will be an expert system planner, who will spear head electrical system planning and provide technical consultation services to our commercial energy procurement teams and utility partners. The engineer should have understanding of power system studies informing transmission system planning and downstream impact to our low voltage facility infrastructure. The candidate will own and deliver studies in load flow, stability, short circuit and electromagnetic transients (EMT), to support a variety of global business needs. Experience in stability analysis to identify critical clearing times, identify voltage constraints and analyze power system damping is critical along with understanding of inverter-based resources and renewable generation, such as Wind Turbine Generators (WTG), photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and hybrid generation, and associated collector system for interconnection applications within software programs PSS/E, PSLF, and PSCAD.

Furthermore, experience in the interconnection process for large generators (>20MW) and knowledge of power regions and ISOs/RTOs, such as: PJM, MISO, NYISO, ERCOT, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ISO-NE is mandatory. The candidate will have detailed understanding of critical LV, MV and HV electrical equipment and of relays, protections schemes, high-voltage circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers electrical switchgear, grounding and earthing and have basic programming (HTML, Python) skills to build reporting and inform business impact.

The candidate will need to possess strong communication skills, and ability to deliver with diverse teams such as infra energy, public policy, capacity planning, sustainability, environmental and real estate etc.

Amazon has a global presence; therefore 25% travel will be necessary. International support will be part of the job, and some international travel will be necessary. Support could consist of working on international teams and could require developing engineering deliverables and design document packages. An understanding of international electrical design requirements is preferable.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Eight (8) or more years performing Power Systems Engineering and Analysis or as a Power System Planner in an electric utility with Transmission system planning focused experience

  • Effective communication and writing skills with the ability to communicate complicated technical issues in a succinct manner to executive leadership.

  • Familiar with NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE transmission planning reliability standards

  • Understanding of ISO-NE Transmission Planning Process and Procedures

  • Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as reliability, load flow, stability, short circuit, voltage regulation, transients, power factor, losses, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • 10+ years of relevant design experience.

  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.

  • Knowledge of Carbon Neutrality and Global Net-Zero Carbon Objectives

  • Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of generation plants, energy storage assets, and substations.

  • Understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.

  • Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects.

  • Experience with Hyperscale Distributed Energy Projects

  • Experience with large-scale utility plant design and interconnection.

  • Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.

  • Capable of working in a highly fast-paced, ambiguous environment, managing conflicting priorities and deliverables.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $212,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
