Amazon Software Development Engineer, (L5), Nucleo in Seattle, Washington

Description

We are looking for an experienced software development engineer to help define and build the future of Bottlerocket! This position is a developer role with a Nucleo team based in Seattle, WA. You will be engineering one or more of the core components of the product used by multiple AWS services and by AWS customers. You will contribute to the design of these components and work closely with other engineers on the team to deliver a reliable, scalable service. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers and help them be successful.

Key job responsibilities

In this role, you will be part of a two-pizza team. You will help establish technical direction, foster team culture, grow junior engineers and deliver exciting features to internal and external customers.

  • Take end to end ownership of the software development life cycle. This includes design, testing and deployment

  • Build services and tooling which allow customers who use Bottlerocket to deploy mission critical applications quickly and safely

  • Champion operational, technical and process improvements

  • Work with your manager and other engineers in delivering to the roadmap

  • Interact with customers on public forums (AWS, GitHub) to respond to queries, issues, and complaints

You will have the opportunity to design and implement systems that delight our customers. You will also learn how things are built and deployed in AWS, brush up on operational excellence, and apply it on the job!

  • Work with the open source community and teams at Amazon to lead and deliver innovations in foundational container technologies

  • Collaborate with other engineers towards broader organizational goals and projects

  • Collaborate with product and program managers, principal engineers for feature definition and delivery

  • Work with other AWS teams such as EKS, EKS-Anywhere, and ECS to build innovative solutions that create value for our customers using Bottlerocket

  • Stay aware of developments in the container space and upstream community projects

  • Contribute to technical designs

About the team

Nucleo team within Serverless Containers builds, maintains, and operates products foundational to running containers in the cloud, many of which are also open-sourced. We are Bottlerocket, Container Runtime, and Finch. Together, these teams do foundational work to make AWS the best place to run containers, and engage with and contribute to strategic open source projects. Bottlerocket is a Linux-based open-source operating system that is purpose-built by Amazon Web Services for running containers.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

  • Experience with Linux package management, version control systems, automated build processes, and software unit testing

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Expertise in Go, C, C++ or Rust development in a Linux environment

  • Experience in developing and maintaining system software for Linux-based operating systems

  • Experience with container runtimes such as containerd and runc, and container orchestrators such as Kubernetes

  • An understanding of and experience in contributing to open source projects is a plus

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
