The Chief News Photographer oversees the day to day operations of the photography staff. He/She is also responsible for the maintenance of all camera equipment operated by news department photographers and MMJs. Makes decisions on training, hiring, termination of photography staff. Establish a coaching and development plan with regular check ins for all staff members using photography equipment.
Daily operation of video cameras to record images or scenes for news reports.
Additional Job Description
Manages staffing, training, time reporting and performance evaluations of all photographers
Works with New Director on hiring, promotion and training of photographer staff.
Trains all MMJs on small camera equipment use, safety and protection
Operates live trucks, SAT truck, TVU packs
Shoots video for news reports
Confers with other personnel to discuss assignments, logistics and shot requirements
Sets up, composes and executes video shots
Maintains video equipment
Edits video clips for television broadcasts and eMedia content
Operates live microwave and satellite trucks in remote situations
Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements & Skills
Technical Degree or 4 year degree in Broadcasting, journalism, digital electronics or equivalent combination of educations and work experience.
Fluency in English
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Minimum three years’ experience operating video recording equipment (More for larger markets and less for smaller markets)
Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
Proficiency with video recording equipment
Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Flexibility to work any shift
Ability to identify needs and coach, mentor and help teach to improve employees’ knowledge of video recording equipment
Establish long range plans and goals for the photographers within the news department
