Sarasota County Government Engineering Technical Specialist I & II - Solid Waste in Sarasota, Florida

In this role, you are working directly with experienced engineers and managers to help them with planning, designing, operations, land management, and implementation of infrastructure and various programs.   • Assist Professional Engineer(s) and at times lead solid waste engineering tasks/functions.

  • Prepare plans, work scopes, cost estimates, and specifications for engineering projects related to solid waste facilities including landfills (closed and active), landfill gas collection, leachate management, soil borrow, and other support systems.

  • Coordinate and oversee capital improvement-related projects and functions.

  • Prepare data for contract negotiations and procurement functions.

  • Prepare solicitations and work with Procurement for bidding on solid waste construction, operations, and professional services contracts including requests for proposals and bids.

  • Develop data and submit reports to regulatory agencies.

  • Develop, submit, and coordinate permit applications and modifications to a Professional Engineer for review and submission to regulatory agencies.

  • Prepare items for Board meeting agendas and Purchase Order documents.

  • Perform topographic surveying using drone hardware and software for operational waste and soil volume checks and verifications.

  • Prepare drawings and figures using AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS/MAP.

  • Perform engineering calculations and reports including volume, design life, landfill gas, and permit applications.

  • Use County software programs such as eGenda, ONESolution, eBuilder, and GOVMax for capital and operational projects.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

Technical Specialist I: Starting Pay Range: $55,000.00 - $62,500.00, depending on experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from a college or university in civil engineering or a related engineering field.

  • -OR- A combination of education and experience or technical engineering-related project experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the degree.

  • Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire.

Technical Specialist II: Starting Pay Range: $63,000.00 - $70,000.00, depending on experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from a college or university in civil engineering or a related engineering field.

  • Two (2) or more years of related civil engineering/project management experience.

  • -OR- A Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or related engineering field AND one-year of related civil engineering/project management experience.

  • -OR- A combination of education and experience or technical engineering-related project experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the degree.

  • Possession of a valid Engineer in Training (EI) Certification granted by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers at the date of hire.

  • Possession of State of Florida Solid Waste Operator or SWANA Manager of Solid Waste Operations Certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months from the date of hire.

  • Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior related engineering work experience or engineering internship in the solid waste field.

  • Possession of FAA Part 107 remote unmanned pilot license for drone operations.

  • Experience with advanced software applications including AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office.

Physical Demands: This position may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
