Sarasota County Government has an excellent opportunity to be a Current Planner with our Planning and Development Services Department. The ideal candidate will have a passion for land use planning and its application and a strong understanding of planning and zoning principles. In this role, you'll work alongside our diverse team on the review and processing of land use change petitions focusing on infill development, re-development, and large-scale developments within our growing county. You will oversee the day-to-day management of current development projects to include rezone petitions, special exception petitions, small area comprehensive plan amendments as associated with rezone petitions, and large-scale developments. Planner II

Intermediate level position, providing advanced professional planning work in the Current Planning division processing Comprehensive Plan Amendments, rezones and special exceptions, large-scale development developments to include Developments of Regional Impact (DRIs) and Developments of Critical Concern (DOCCs), Critical Are Planning (CAPs) studies, and special projects as assigned. Serve as a member of the Development Review Coordinate team as needed. Make presentations to the public, advisory boards, neighborhood groups, Planning Commission, and the Board of County Commissioners.

To thrive in this position, you must have-

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Urban and Regional Planning, Geography or a major recognized by the American Planning Association as related field, and a minimum of four (4) years related professional planning experience.

  • Master’s degree may substitute for one year of required experience.

  • Planning experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, depending on the type of experience.

Starting Pay Range: $61,131.20 - $82,534.40/year, based on your experience.

Planner III

Advanced professional position, participating in a project management capacity as lead planner and primary project resource to county initiatives directed by the County’s Comprehensive Plan and Plan Amendments, Critical Area Planning (CAP) studies, revitalization/redevelopment plans, large-scale developments, Developments of Regional Impact (DRIs), Developments of Critical Concern (DOCCs), strategic planning initiatives, and public/private development plans. May mentor/monitor one or more Planners and provide regular input to Planner I’s and II’s on projects and assignments. Make presentations to the public, advisory boards, neighborhood groups, Planning Commission, and the Board of County Commissioners.

To thrive in this position, you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Geography or a major recognized by the American Planning Association as a related field, AND a minimum of six (6) years related professional planning experience, of which two years have been in a supervisory capacity.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in large and complex projects.

  • Master’s degree may substitute for one year of required experience.

  • Planning experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, depending on the type of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • AICP certification.

  • Project Management experience.

  • GIS Mapping experience.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

About Everything ElseStarting Pay Range: $67,246.40 - $90,792.00/year, based on your experience.
