Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor..Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Transportation Engineer IV: Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.Transportation Engineer V: Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or research. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.Essential DutiesThe essential duties for Transportation Engineer I include:Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.Monitors consultant design contracts.Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications Estimates (PSE) submission, special specifications or special provisions.Reviews and revises schematics, PSE, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing for transportation projects.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.The essential duties for Transportation Engineer II include all those listed above and:Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts.Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.The essential duties for Transportation Engineer III include all those listed above and:Assesses and reports actual project progress versu planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projectsDevelops plans for the Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.The essential duties for Transportation Engineer IV include all those listed above and:Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and/or prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance.Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.The essential duties for Transportation Engineer V include all those listed above and:Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for highly complex projects.Oversees and develops plans for complex project(s) related to their resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.
