Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Transportation Engineer IV: Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.Essential Duties:Transportation Engineer I:Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contractsAssists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the districtPerforms and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PSE) submission, special specifications or special provisionsPerforms engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contractsReviews, coordinates, monitors and approves routine and emergency maintenance contracts; performs/oversees maintenance specifications writing/review, plans and proposal review, and preparation of estimates for lettingPerforms other job responsibilities as assignedTransportation Engineer II:Includes items listed above and the following:Assists in providing recommendations to the Motor Carrier Division for routing of overload vehiclesCoordinates maintenance matters with Area EngineersTransportation Engineer III:Includes all items listed above and the following:Evaluates and makes recommendations for developing, monitoring, and updating integrated project plans and schedules so that projects may be executed in the most efficient and effective manner possibleAssists in developing and/or monitoring budgetsTransportation Engineer IV:Includes all items listed above and the following:Reviews contracts and related documents for executionLeads/trains professional and administrative staff
