University of Utah Sr Transport Engineer Wireless in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah
This position is funded through a five-year National Science Foundation (NSF) grant and reports to the Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN) Field Operations manager. Position will work with research support staff affiliated with the Nevada System of Higher Education's NevadaNet, the Utah Education and Telehealth Network, and Arizona's Sun Corridor Network, as partners in creating a culture and developing experience for cyberinfrastructure support for the "Last Mile" of field science. Core activities include coordinated workforce development and team operations, including new recruitment of field engineering and Internet-of-Things professionals. Install, maintain, and repair physical transport and/or wide area network equipment. Designs, develops, implements, maintains, and enhances telecommunication networks, systems and equipment. Analyze existing networks and equipment and identifies opportunities for improvement. Identifies, analyzes, and repairs product failures, orders and replaces parts as needed. Determine and recommend solutions and/or services that best fit the needs of specific field research.Responsible for the planning, design, deployment, testing, and system performance of a wireless network. Will create RF (radio frequency) plans and designs, conduct radio propagation modeling and prediction values to determine cell site location and conduct cell site/antenna design activities. Position will assist in the development of standards relating to the RF design and operation of the network. Position will contribute to system growth plans to ensure smooth expansion of the network. Position will take part in field/site activities to assist in the approval and development of new private (LTE/5G) cell sites and integrate new sites into the research network. Position must ensure compliance with network and engineering standards and guidelines. Position requires highly specialized skill set. Influences best practices within discipline. Conducts the most complex and vital work, unsupervised and with complete latitude for independent judgment.UEN Specific Summary: Responsible for statewide provisioning and troubleshooting and repair of existing transport equipment for the Utah Education Network (UEN). A sound working knowledge of ROADM, DWDM, SONET, Cisco router/switch configuration and support is essential. Familiarity with large heterogeneous wide area networks and a demonstrated knowledge of networking circuits to include; gigabit Ethernet, metro Ethernet, OC-3, DS-3 and DS-1, plus experience with TCP/IP, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, and supporting network applications, is required.
