GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, installation,
maintenance and repair of traffic control devices, transformers, switches and related electronic control
equipment as assigned; makes up and installs traffic control signs; inventories and accounts for
damaged signs. Work varies, requiring individual judgement within prescribed standards and
procedures, with some leeway for discretion and independent action.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
o Assists in the construction, installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and the repair of traffic
control and signal systems, including setting posts, poles and signs, painting markings and signs,
installing and repairing signal heads, controllers, telemetry systems, video equipment,
microprocessors, photoelectric systems and related equipment.
o Locates ground trouble in traffic signal systems; investigates complaints of malfunctioning traffic
control devices and other electrical equipment as assigned.
o Inspects signals, replaces burned-out lamps, broken cover plates, sign and reflectors; welds;
performs decorative lights maintenance; paints cross-walks, curbs and symbols.
o Prepares records of activities.
o Operates light and medium equipment and trucks; uses equipment and materials requiring minimal
servicing.
o Aids in emergency and storm related activities, removes snow, works on flood levee and places
barricades; assists other sections or departments as needed.
o Performs overtime as required and other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:
Acts as lead worker when helpers are assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:
o High school diploma or G.E.D. plus two (2) years of experience in related work.
o College-level course work or vocational training in electronic work is desirable and journeyman
electrical license preferred.
o Must attain IMSA Work Zone Safety, Traffic Signals Level I, Field Technician II, and Inspector
certifications within twenty-four (24) months from employment start date.
o Must possess a valid Kansas CDL Class B drivers license with air brakes endorsement, or obtain
within one (1) year from employment start date.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees and pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL
training at Salina Area Technical College.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:
This position has a 40 minute response time by way of the most direct route and within the posted
speed limits; or must live within the city limits of Salina, Bennington, Minneapolis, McPherson, Solomon,
Abilene, or Carneiro.
