VETERINARY TECHNICIAN / PET ADOPTION CENTER
JOB OVERVIEW:The purpose of this position is to examine and evaluate the health of the shelter animals; consult with county's contracted veterinarian; and perform necessary treatments, procedures and administering of medications as allowed by the State. The work is performed under the direction of the Director - Humane Services Division.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works as a team member with other shelter staff to ensure smooth day to day operations in the kennel, front office, and medical.
- Works as a team member to assist Director and co-supervisors to ensure smooth day to day operations.
- Works as a team member with a veterinarian, veterinary technician, and other shelter personnel to care for animals.
- Examines all owner-surrendered, confiscated, and stray animals entering the shelter.
- Conducts pre-adoption health examinations and evaluates for gender, breed, age, temperament, medical conditions including but not limited to canine and feline illnesses, dermatological conditions, and dental conditions.
- Monitors health condition of all animals in the shelter.
- Performs clinical analysis such as fecal, diagnostic testing and blood work.
- Assists veterinarian with surgeries including spaying/neutering.
- Assists with adoption and euthanasia recommendations for animals.
- Cleans and sterilizes surgery room and equipment.
- Educates the public about health conditions of animals.
- Assist other shelter personnel with adoptions, special events and educational programs.
- Inoculates animals and administers medications for the treatment and prevention of animal illnesses.
- Researches information and establishes practices for sheltering protocols, shelter medicine and disease control.
- Train shelter staff on animal anatomy, first aid, animal care and disease management.
- Maintains accurate records of all surgeries, drug administering and other information as required by St. Charles County, Missouri, State and Federal regulations, ordinances, and laws.
- Orders and stocks medical supplies, drugs, and equipment needed for the unit. Monitors and request supplies for monthly Sterile Feral Clinic.
- Assists the foster coordinator with medical treatment of all foster animals.
- Provides direction, support and leadership to the shelter staff and volunteers as assigned.
- Checks expiration dates on medical inventory, evaluates medicines and medical products as well as place orders on supplies as necessary.
- Routinely performs humane euthanasia on animals.
- Enters information into a computer.
- Educates visitors and co-workers about the health and wellbeing of animals in the shelter.
- Works safely in all aspects, and handles all animals, domestic, exotic and wildlife, in a safe and humane manner.
- Assist in cleaning cat, dog, and other areas in the kennels.
- Assists with the bathing, flea dips and bottle feeding of animals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
