SUMMARY:Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled duties in the maintenance, repair and construction of City Streets and related structures and systems.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITICS: This is an entry to mid-level position in the street maintenance division of Public Works. It is distinguished from the next-class level by the absence of the ability to efficiently operate all heavy equipment. This class level also has the potential (based on experience) to serve as a crew leader in the training of others work. This position reports to the Street Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Constructs, maintains and repairs City streets, alleys, rights-of-way, and sidewalks. Prepares and performs patching of potholes, sealing cracks and repairing blacktop surfaces.

  • Uses hot or cold mix to repair streets, patch utility pavement cuts, potholes and seal cracks. Sprays oil on streets to seal pavement.

  • Sets up building forms for mixing, pouring and finishing cement. Assists in street, pavement, sidewalk, curb, gutter and catch basin construction.

  • Ability to read and set grade along with other minor survey knowledge.

  • Cleans maintains, constructs and repairs storm drains, alleys, catch basins and manholes. Excavates storm drains as needed.

  • Applies street markings and traffic control symbols according to State laws and City needs. Prepares and applies color and line dimensions to pavement. Paints centerlines, crosswalks, parking stalls and curbing. Cleans and maintains painting equipment.

  • Assists with the placement and maintenance of traffic cones, barricades and other control articles to control and divert traffic. Places signs according to traffic engineers and State, City and federal laws, guidelines, ordinances and general directions.

  • Maintains equipment and supplies on vehicles.

  • Completes records and activities logs.

  • Helps with community events as needed.

  • Responds to emergency and off-hour situations and subject to on-call status as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    • Work is routinely performed in an outdoor environment, subject to driving to conduct work, seasonal heat, and cold and extreme weather conditions.
    • Subject to noise from equipment operation.
    • Subject to dust, orders, dirt, oil/grease, gases, vapors from paints, solvents and equipment operation, working around and with machinery having moving parts, exposure to pesticide and herbicide chemicals, working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber, power saws and flying d bris, working below the surface, and working at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
    • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, running and occasionally lifting heavy objects up to 90 pounds.
