Description of Work

This position is in the Rockingham County Bridge Maintenance Unit. Position is manual and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. Work includes a wide variety of skills utilized in the functional areas including carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection, repair of bridges/culverts/large pipe & headwalls, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, trenching and shoring, lead paint removal and steel fabrication.

The use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities is required. The ability to exert more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This job will require work to be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.

  • Demonstrated ability supervising and training others in equipment operations.

  • Working experience as the Lead Worker on a Bridge or Maintenance Crew without supervision.

  • Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculating quantities, and placing orders, plan reading and layout, directing drilling and cutting of holes, or directing erection of steel beams and bridge components.

  • Working experience as a lead in trenching and shoring operations.

Additional Expectations

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. In this position, working safely is a condition of employment. Safety toe shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
