Function of Position:

The College Relations Specialist II assists in executing the College's communications in support of Community Relations. This position supports a broad range of institutional communications, with a particular emphasis on media relations, college-wide initiatives, internal communications, and crisis and emergency communications. As such, the position occasionally requires work beyond the traditional workday and adheres to the Faculty Association Contractual Agreement guidelines (Article 45 - Compensation, Section B). The College Relations Specialist II works with internal and external audiences to strengthen awareness and understanding of MCC's key messages and brand.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Supports MCC's strategic objectives through communication tactics across a variety of platforms, including print and digital media.

  • Implements aspects of the College's integrated communications plan, brand strategy, and the promotion of key messages through internal and external communications, media relations, and other strategies.

  • Supports the College's enrollment and brand positioning goals.

  • Identifies opportunities to advance the College's reputation and helps develop and implement ideas.

  • Assists with crisis and emergency communications efforts.

  • Creates and implements project plans/schedules.

  • Assist in content development, editing, and proofreading for Community Relations and SUNY-related projects. This includes department web pages, annual reports, announcements/articles, and media relations.

  • Produce stories and articles for print and digital spaces; media releases, pitches, and advisories; social media content and internal communications.

  • Assist with the general (public/media) activities within the Community Relations office such as photo taking and management, event support, fact confirmation, and interviews.

Secondary Functions:

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the director of Community Relations.

  • Supports broad institutional events with strategic communications.

  • Conducts secondary research to inform and support the advancement of the College's brand strategy.

  • Stays abreast of issues and interests of external and internal audiences to guide communication strategies and tactics.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree in a related field (communication, journalism, public relations, English, etc.) from a regionally accredited higher education institution.

  • Prior work experience in communications.

  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills.

  • Evidence of computer skills applicable to the Community Relations Department.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree in a related field (communication, journalism, public relations, English, etc.) from a regionally accredited higher education institution.

  • Five years of experience in communications or a related field.

  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

    Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position begins at $52,000.
