University of Rochester Laboratory Engineer I in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs engineering work within URnano, particularly the cleanroom, requiring professional knowledge of the theory and practices of planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and alteration of specialized equipment and instrument systems. Examples of such equipment includes but is not limited to: thin film deposition systems (physical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, chemical vapor deposition), dry etching (reactive ion etching), and optical and electron lithography (laserwriter, electron beam lithography)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides engineering services in support of engineering and physical science research activities, performing professional engineering work involving the solution of engineering problems and/or the design of specialized equipment and instrument systems; maintainins regular function of specialized microfabrication equipment through preventative maintenance and regular cleaning.

  2. Troubleshoots and services commercial, in-house built, and/or test equipment; may fabricate and/or supervise fabrication of equipment; may assist in selection and purchase of components.

  3. Keeps laboratory space orderly and clean. Performs daily cleanroom chores and maintains the laboratory chemical inventory.

  4. May supervise technicians and/or clerical staff assisting in experiments. May support classroom and laboratory teaching activities, including training users on tools and collecting tool performance data on a regular basis.

  5. Consults with other engineering and research specialists; keeps abreast of state-of-the-art advances. Maintains occasional contact with vendors.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Degree in a relevant technical field, or some combination of education and experience.

  • 1 year of experience in lieu of education is acceptable.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $55,955 - $78,336 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
