University of Rochester Communications Specialist II in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Marketing & Public Relations Specialist II (MAG), reporting directly to the Director of Marketing & Engagement, develops and implements content and public relations strategies that advance MAG’s mission. Ensures proofreading and general quality control are implemented on every assigned project. Applies interpersonal skills and analytical proficiency. This includes content communication and digitization of marketing, as well as public relations outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Public Relations Outreach:

  • Exhibits strong written and verbal skills to effectively communicate ideas to the media, staff, and MAG Board of Managers.

  • Pitches and secures strategic press coverage in national and local magazines, newspapers, TV, and online media outlets.

  • Researches and creates story pitches and other press materials as needed.

  • Acts as liaison to and maintains positive relationships with the media and other interested parties, both locally and nationally, including active pitching of stories and content for the Memorial Art Gallery. Actively seeks out and updates media and influencer lists and contacts. Monitors the media for potential story opportunities, queries, and follow-ups.

  • Works closely with the Director of M&E on comprehensive public relations strategies for fully executed campaigns.

Digitization of Marketing:

  • Influences and partakes in marketing analysis of digital needs.

  • Assist the Director with analytics regarding marketing strategies (including local and national advertising and digital initiatives)

  • Continually researching and engaging in digital marketing, keeping up with the ever-changing technology and platforms, to best support MAG’s communication needs.

  • Analyze digital campaigns for past programs and events to assess future advertising prospects.

Content Creation:

  • Serve as a writer, initial editor, and content creator for email campaigns.

  • Develop and publish content and communications for internal and external audiences that support the strategic plan's goals.

  • Proofreads and edits marketing and other materials related to exhibitions, programming, and other MAG functions.

Works closely with the Director of Marketing & Engagement to attend community meetings as assigned and/or when the Director is unable to attend.

Identify and recommend MAG participation in relevant community initiatives.

Tracks attendance of programs and revenue and seeks to identify trends as well as areas of potential growth.

Analyzes programs and determines where there is room for growth/change.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, in communication, public relations, media management, or related field.

  • 4 years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications or related background.

  • Ability to assess and manage multiple competing priorities and work well under pressure; excellent time management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project confidence and professionalism.

  • High inter-personal skills and ability to be self-directed

  • Experience and knowledge of Rochester’s media and news outlets, as well as contacts beyond, including nationally, a plus.

  • Proven track record of cultivating and maintaining relationships in the community.

  • Must be able to interact at various organizational levels within the University of Rochester (deans, faculty, administrators, staff, etc.) and beyond with confidence.

  • Proficiency in MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $60,431 - $84,603 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
