Salary Range or Pay Grade

$82,500 to $110,000

Description

The University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics (UR LLE) invites applications for non-tenure track faculty equivalent computational scientist to join the Laser-Plasma Instabilities group in the Plasma and Ultrafast Laser Science and Engineering (PULSE) division. The PULSE Division supports a broad range of both theoretical/computational and experimental plasma physics science, including inertial confinement fusion, ultrashort pulse laser-plasma science, and ultrafast plasma photonics.

The successful candidate will join the recently awarded hub, IFE-COLoR (Consortium On LPI Research), led by the University of Rochester. The candidate will be expected to have a strong background in inertial confinement fusion and knowledge of the associated hydrodynamic modeling. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physics, astrophysics, computational physics, or a related field; they must be a highly motivated self-starter.

Potential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Computational studies of inertial fusion energy

  • Code optimization through improved algorithms and parallelization

  • Coupling of an inline 3D Monte Carlo hot electrons package to 3D radiation hydrodynamics code Excession, for interpretation of pre-heat on current OMEGA experiments and extrapolations at higher energy scales for Inertial Fusion Energy

  • Assessment of the effect of magnetic fields on hot electrons by coupling of the hot electron package with magneto-hydrodynamics in Excession

  • Participation in other developments and experiment interpretation related to the 3D modeling of imprint, foams and cross-beam energy transfer

  • Develop new or augmented physics packages.

  • Annual scientific publications and presentations

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physics or an equivalent technical field

  • Computational experience with advanced hydrodynamic simulations

  • Excellent publication record
