Overview

Communications creates and provides strategic communications to the Laboratory’s internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. It sets and implements a cohesive strategy to amplify the visibility of PNNL's research and develops standards and efforts that communicate PNNL’s value proposition. In doing so, Communications enhances the Laboratory’s institutional reputation and science and technology agenda. Further, Communications drives employee-focused communications; leads media and outreach to external stakeholders; supports research through robust technical editing, formatting, and graphics support; and protects the Laboratory's reputation through issues management and transparency with news media.

PNNL’s Communications organization is comprised of over 100 talented communications professionals committed to elevating PNNL’s reputation, inspiring action, and engaging audiences by transforming the Lab’s science into influential communications and compelling stories. 

Responsibilities

The Social Media Manager is a strategic thinker and proactive team member who will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing our social media strategy to enhance brand awareness, increase engagement, and drive online traffic. The ideal candidate is a data-driven storyteller with the experience and passion for the latest digital trends, business practices, content curation, and audience growth.

In this role, you will be a key member of the external communications group, where you are responsible for the planning, creation, and maintenance of the social media ecosystem. We seek a leader who can blend strategy and creativity to transform our science mission into inspiring social media content that is exciting and engaging. The ideal candidate will excel at developing a social media persona on behalf of PNNL to engage, build, and grow our online communities strategically harnessing every character, hashtag, and emoji to support the lab’s mission and goals.

This candidate will foster a culture of social media excellence, provide guidance as a trusted advisor, and establish continually evolving best practices.

Social Media Strategy

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with business objectives and goals.

Campaign and Content Management

  • Identify key audiences and curate, create, and tailor content that maximizes engagement and reach for that audience.

  • Plan, create, and schedule engaging content to include text, images, videos, stories, across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

  • Design and develop social media campaigns to support various business objectives.

  • Collaborate with designers, copywriters, and others throughout the communications division to provide high-quality content that is consistent with the PNNL voice and brand.

Community Engagement

  • Create standard operating processes (SOPs) to monitor, engage, and respond to followers and influencers in a timely and professional manner that is in alignment with policy.

  • Create, socialize, and manage social media policies, processes, and guidelines for PNNL employees, ensuring adherence across all platforms.

  • Create best practices and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that support timely external communications messaging across all social media channels.

  • Build and nurture online communities through engaging content and partnerships with online influencers.

Analytics and Optimization

  • Track, analyze, and report on key performance metrics.

  • Use insights to optimize content strategy, posting schedules, and audience engagement.

  • Continually track new formats, trends, and strategies for consideration to improve performance and ROI.

  • Develop and maintain an editorial content calendar in alignment with business objectives.

Social Media Activation

  • Develop partnerships with internal stakeholders to provide strategic guidance on social media strategy that aligns with their goals as well as the overall lab communications priorities.

  • Manage best practices for social media to incorporate accessibility and intellectual property requirements effectively.

Crisis Management

  • Be prepared to properly identify, address, and route social media issues as they occur in a timely manner.

  • Create a standard operating procedure (SOP) to address social media issues needing immediate or timely response.

  • Serve as a member on the information center during times of crises.

  • Manage social media issues across all channels during crisis communications scenarios.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 3+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with an ability to lead diverse teams through influence as a key communications team member.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Robust strategy and messaging acumen, including a track-record of being effective in this work at previous organizations.

  • Expertise in conducting data analysis, including the ability to identify, collect and analyze data from various sources to draw relevant insights with social media strategy and external audiences.

  • Strong ability to stay updated on the evolving social media landscape, industry trends and best practices in social media and communications.

  • Understanding of and experience with crisis communications protocols and scenarios.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.
