Overview

The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. CIT helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community.

The Software Engineering, Platforms & Tools (SEPT) Group at PNNL seeks a motivated high school student intern with an interest in assisting in ensuring the standardization of various support documentation for out DHS sponsor.

Our ideal candidate will have a drive to collaborate with document library team in a national laboratory environment, contributing to world-leading research and gaining experience in a fast-paced and exciting research team. We are looking for candidates that could contribute to multi-disciplinary projects within our ongoing portfolio. The candidate will collaborate closely with research mentor, team leader, and laboratory personnel in ensuring that our document library meets our newest standards.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high caliber sophomore, junior or senior high school students for intern assignments within the Student Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP) . This summer internship is a research-based experience for students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors and/or students interested in science and engineering. SRAP is a 10-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for summer cohort will be June 17th, 2025.

Evaluate and Improve Documentation:

Review the contents of the current document library, scoring the contents against current FSM style guides, ensuring the consistency of the documents, while ensuring that they are easy to understand and helpful for the end users. Your work will help staff quickly provide solutions to users and customers, improving communication skills

Interactive Learning and Networking:

Connect and interact with lab researchers working to keep our nation safe, while participating in lab projects. This fosters real-world application of science and technology principles

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application

  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date

  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Proficiency in computer science, and English Language Arts

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
