Responsibilities

The Battery Materials and Systems (BMS) Group within the Energy Processes and Materials Division of the Energy and Environment Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory works on a diverse portfolio of storage technologies including Li-ion battery, redox flow battery, Na-metal halide battery, Na-ion battery, Pb-acid, and aqueous Zn batteries. The research ranges from fundamental and applied material research to battery prototyping and demonstration, battery reliability testing, and safety codes and standards.

The BMS Group is currently seeking a chemist/material scientist to help a long duration energy storage project in the DOE’s Grid Storage Launchpad facility at PNNL. The position is for a highly motivated scientist with hands-on skills on flow battery technologies and industrial experience in testing of flow battery stacks and/or flow battery energy storage systems. In general, the job responsibilities include preparation of electrolyte formulations for vanadium flow batteries, synthesis of electrolytes for aqueous organic flow batteries, evaluating various electrolyte performance, investigating material compatibility for various redox flow chemistries, and design/assembly/testing of single cells, as well as stacks comprising of cells with large area electrodes. The successful candidate needs to have a strong knowledge in battery testing equipment, test protocol design and execution, and experience preparing reports of battery test data.

The candidate has the opportunity to join a team of about 60 world-class scientists and engineers working on varieties of battery technologies with diverse backgrounds in electrochemistry, materials science, and electrical engineering.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with PM, PI and other staffs to prepare electrolyte formulations for vanadium flow batteries, synthesize electrolytes for aqueous organic flow batteries, evaluate various electrolyte performance, investigate materials compatibility for various redox flow chemistries, design/assemble/test single cells, and design/assemble/test stacks with large area electrodes.

  • Working with PM, PI and other staffs to design/determine test protocols for specific flow battery technologies.

  • Working independently or in a team to program battery cycling equipment and interface battery management systems with battery cyclers.

  • Working independently or in a team to assemble battery cycler data into reports on battery performance and degradation.

  • Working safely in the labs

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA -OR-

  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineering or Science degree with 3 or more years of experience.

  • Experience in battery testing and redox flow batteries.

  • Experience in programming battery cycler equipment specifically Arbin.

  • Experience in interfacing battery management systems with battery cycler.

  • Experience with data analysis software (Excel, PowerBi, Tableau).

  • Experience developing data acquisition systems
