Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The scope of this position is to solve difficult design, engineering related problems. Participate in generating and executing plans for process quality improvement designs across OCS locations. The individual will have the opportunity to be a member of cross-functional project sub-teams, on early innovation stage projects, from concept generation, through technology development, detail design/build, and start-up in manufacturing. This position will translate engineering solutions to requirements, then further to process and/or equipment, fixtures and tooling designs which deliver all required and promised performance criteria.
Key Responsibilities
Develop mechanical solutions and process changes to control and eliminate manufacturing issues.
Perform conceptual and detailed design of machines, products and systems using 3D CAD and simulation modules.
Work with other project team members on solving difficult mechanical engineering related problems, understanding project related issues, and general process engineering and process understanding.
Provide engineering-level production support to manufacturing operation.
Solve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with subject matter experts.
Provide engineering expertise for fundamental understanding of manufacturing issues.
Develop and update engineering and operations documentation.
Interface with outside suppliers on specifying and procuring various precision products, fixtures, and machine components to support the projects they are involved in.
Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards.
Detailing of mechanical parts/assemblies as well as generate and help drawings life cycle management for new or existing fixtures and tools.
Help plan and participate in the training of personnel and production associates receiving equipment & process deployed by the project.
Experiences/Education - Required
Mechatronic or Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent.
Minimum 2-4 years of manufacturing experience
Fully bilingual
Strong understanding of mechanical design, with knowledge of materials, fabrication methods (machining, forming, molding etc.) assembly and joining methods, GD&T, tolerance stack ups/error budgets.
Experience in mechanical design, with an emphasis on machine design utilizing components such as motors, drives, bearings, actuators, part handling systems, conveyance systems, motion stages, linkages, pneumatics, etc.
Excellent understanding of engineering fundamentals, and the ability to deploy those fundamentals into successful designs.
Ability to integrate commercially available technologies, components, and processes into robust process manufacturing solutions.
Experience with 3D CAD modeling (Solidworks, CREO preferred).
Ability to effectively manage highly ambiguous situations.
Ability to apply decision making and problem-solving skills to review facts and weigh options using a systematic approach to solve problems
