Washoe County School District Fleet Maintenance Coordinator (40 hrs/wk, 260 days) in Reno, Nevada

FLEET MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Fleet Operations Manager, plans, coordinates schedules, inspects and supervises activities concerned with service, maintenance and repair on school buses and other District owned/leased vehicles and equipment. Oversees the day-to-day transportation shop operations at their assigned yard to ensure there is adequate and safe equipment available for transporting students to and from school. Assists the Fleet Operations Manager in organizing, supervising and managing all facets of vehicle and shop management in yards. Assists in the management of the transportation shops including cost control and metric driven performance. Manages all aspects of safety and security compliance for transportation vehicles and equipment. Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance in addition to their related work and duties as required.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Interviews and evaluates prospective employees; makes recommendations concerning personnel activities such as hiring, promotion, disciplinary measures and dismissal; oversees and coordinates work related problems; provides counseling and technical guidance to subordinates; and insures continuous training of all shop personnel in departmental standards, safety and maintenance procedures, and improved techniques and materials; performs annual and probationary employee evaluations utilizing the District's Performance Evaluation Report; evaluates, prioritizes and assigns daily work to the Fleet Maintenance Technicians and Fuel Island Attendants.

Develops and implements work methods, procedures and maintenance schedules for transportation, upholstery and parts shops; determines priorities and plans and coordinates completion of work with District personnel, outside technicians, vendors, and insures that completed work is in compliance with specifications, plans and codes.

Maintains administrative, operational and personnel records, as well as local, state, and federal reports; reads and interprets District policies and procedures; prepares metric driven shop performance reports and performance indicators prepares shop budget; estimates applicable materials, methods, costs and labor requirements; evaluates and prepares recommendations and specifications for the purchase of new vehicles, equipment and products; provides analysis and data to determine units to be dismantled or sold at a surplus sale; insures that safety and hazards precautions are followed; and insures proper maintenance of tools, equipment and shop facilities.

Investigates customer service complaints relative to safety issues, and mechanical issues, and takes appropriate corrective action; works with the Nevada Highway Patrol to ensure the District's school buses are maintained in compliance with local, state and federal safety standards.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  1. Six (6) years of progressively responsible journey level technician experience in automotive or heavy-duty vehicle and equipment maintenance, of which two (2) years include responsible supervisory experience;

OR

  1. Associates' degree or completion of a recognized two (2) year automotive technician or heavy-duty vehicle and equipment apprenticeship program;

AND

  1. Four (4) years of journey level technician experience, of which two (2) years include responsible supervisory experience;

Knowledge of:Methods and practices for maintaining a large fleet of vehicles and buses; principles, methods, materials and tools used in automotive, diesel, and mechanical repair; troubleshooting and overhauling techniques for gasoline engines, diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, front and rear ends, electrical systems and hydraulic and wheel lifts; hazards and safety precautions of automotive and mechanical work; use and care of hand and power tools; Nevada codes, regulations and rules applicable to the maintenance and operations of vehicles in the transportation of children; supply, purchasing and budgeting techniques; supervisory techniques and procedures; and strong working knowledge of MS Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and transportation related software including work order systems, GPS, and inventory programs.

Skill at: Working independently and as a team leader; training, coordinating, supervising and evaluating personnel performing mechanical duties; performing journey level technician activities; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; interpreting and applying applicable codes; reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications; making estimates of materials and labor costs; preparing and maintaining administrative, operational and personnel records and reports; communicating effectively orally and in writing; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in course of work.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Nevada State Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL), with a driving record acceptable to the District.
