Microsoft Corporation Senior Manager – Research & Development (R&D) Facility Operations in Redmond, Washington

The Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I) business is critical to delivering on this mission and vision, building and operating Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, which is growing rapidly in response to unprecedented demand for Microsoft services. CO+I operate one of the largest cloud networks on the planet – comprised of more than 160 Datacenters, 130+ edge sites, 2+ million miles of fiber, and millions of servers and network and storage devices.

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations and Innovation Organization (CO+I) is seeking a Senior Manager – Research & Development (R&D) Facility Operations for the New Technology Introduction team within the Office of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer). This position will manage dynamic facility operations in and R&D environment encompassing construction, facility readiness, general operations, and supporting test setup and execution of next generation data center technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day activities within the R&D facility, including such activities as ensuring operation of essential equipment, making sure adequate supplies are available for R&D activities, reviewing budgets, purchasing, inventory management etc.

  • Manages facility service requests in support of project implementations, facility maintenance, and equipment calibration needs.

  • Manage facility capability and capacity planning to support R&D projects for emerging technologies for datacenters.

  • Drive continuous improvement efforts to meet and support needs inclusive of system operational goals, capacity optimization, and emerging capability needs.

  • Manage & support vendor contracts for services, construction upgrade projects to support testing.

  • Work with various stakeholders like Engineering, Safety, Security, Operations, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Architect Engineers (AEs), General Contractors (GCs) during project planning and execution in facility to deliver projects.

  • Removes barriers to agility to enable the team to shift priorities quickly without losing productivity.

  • Ensure that electrical, mechanical, and/or fire/life safety equipment within the facility are operating efficiently.

  • Share best practices, assist others in learning role, process, procedures, and mentors others.

  • Promotes a culture of safety, security, and compliance in all aspects of R&D facility activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent AND 2+ years experience delivering server and network deployment projects in large-scale environments

  • OR 3+ years' experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years of experience in construction, engineering, lab, and/or research and development activities

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years experience in construction, engineering, lab, and/or research and development activities

  • 3+ years experience in Critical Environment infrastructures (e.g., UPS, Generator, AHU) or working in physical IT infrastructures (e.g., Servers, SANs, Networking, Capacity, DC Rack/Enclosures, structured cabling)

  • 3+ years of experience with project management or relevant certification/training in project management

  • Experience with lab test equipment setups for signal measurement using oscilloscopes and the capability to read and interpret schematic diagrams.

  • Managed facility build out and/or upgrade construction projects

  • Effective Verbal and Written Communication Skills

  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, multi-faceted projects, and deadlines simultaneously

  • Ability to independently manage deadlines and support staff

  • Ability to influence cross-discipline teams

  • Motivated to continuously learn and improve existing solutions

Data Center Operations Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,800 - $195,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $135,200 - $222,000 per year.
