POSITION SUMMARY

Supervises and directs the carpentry installation, maintenance and repair of all City owned buildings; oversees temporary carpentry projects such as the erection and dismantling of stands, barricades, etc.

Department : Public Works

Position Type : Announcement/Bid

Salary : $68,753 per year.

Union : This position is included in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union, Local 2037 and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Union Bid Form : Not required. Your application for this position will serve as your union Bid Form.

    Qualifying Requirements : Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE : Applicants must clearly meet or exceed one of the following requirements listed below to qualify for this position. ( Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

  • Carpentry Journeyman License + one (1) year paid professional experience supervising others in the carpentry field (5 Total Qualifying Years); OR

  • Four (4) years of paid professional Carpentry experience + one (1) year experience supervising others (5 Total Qualifying Years); OR

  • Five (5) years of paid professional supervision work in the construction industry (5 Total Qualifying Years)

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a High School Diploma or GED Equivalency.

  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training may be substituted for work experience on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above) . Candidates who did not go through an apprenticeship program to obtain a Journeyman Certificate MUST show five (5) years of Construction Supervision experience.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

NOTE : Department may require a written/performance skills assessment at the time of interview. This is not a Civil Service Examination.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Supervises and coordinates carpenters, and other assigned personnel and/or crews on carpentry projects such as: construction projects, installations, and temporary projects such as the erection and dismantling of stands and barricades, planning and coordinating work with other building trades, contractors, project managers, and DPW personnel, etc.

  • Directs carpentry related building maintenance and renovation projects including the installation of City’s central lock system; establishes necessary project materials and time estimates.

  • Plans, coordinates and directs contractor provided services as may be required ; Schedules work crews and may deliver crew and equipment to job site; coordinates and schedules work activities with other DPW Divisions or City Departments as requested or required ; May serve as a department liaison with other City Departments, outside agencies, etc. on assigned projects

  • Inspects work daily while in progress and upon completion to ensure quality of work and adherence to departmental and safety standards and procedures as well as provide progress updates as requested or required ; Incorporates Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and seasonal maintenance of all city assets.

  • Directs the safe operation of assigned motorized equipment; responsible for ensuring preventive maintenance schedule on assigned equipment; May review and recommend vehicle and equipment specs for acquisition.

  • Recommends establishment of contracts and directs acquisition of materials, supplies and various types of building services, etc. to supervisor; orders approved tools and supplies necessary to complete assigned work; assists in the preparing of budgets for area and monitoring costs of projects and maintenance.

  • Maintains records, including timesheets, job progress, materials cost, etc.; prepares accurate reports, etc. as assigned or required , both manually and electronically.

  • 24 hour on call in the event of emergencies; may work evening, weekends, and/or holidays.

  • Plans, develops, directs, coordinates, organizes and controls the materials, equipment and personnel under jurisdiction toward the effective, efficient and economical attainment of program goals, including maximum convenience to the public and safety of employees.

  • Manages area of responsibility in strict accordance with applicable laws, regulations and established policy including union agreements to ensure fair and standardized treatment of employees.
