Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Special Education Teacher for the Child & Adolescent Services - Education Department within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.The primary purpose of the Special Education Teacher is to function as a teacher for the Rutgers Day School Program providing therapeutic and special education services to children.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Functions as a Special Education Teacher providing education services to children.
  • Completes education documentation including monthly progress notes and report cards.
  • Attends IEP meetings and prepares written summaries including present levels of academic and behavioral performance and functioning, goals and objectives and instructional modifications and accommodations for these meetings.
  • Plans and implements detailed lesson plans according to New Jersey State Learning Standards and student IEPs.
  • Works with related services including counseling, occupational and speech therapy to develop individual interventions and strategies to support academic achievement.
  • Works with supervisors to update content area curriculum and design new course offerings.
  • Proctors administration of state mandated testing.
  • Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary staff team implementing each child's treatment plan.
  • Helps implement, and assists with the design and development of the classroom behavior management system.
  • Participates in the development of children's individual treatment plans.
  • Maintains appropriate boundaries with children and families. Interacts with children and family members therapeutically with empathy and respect.
  • Executes educationally appropriate curriculum and behavior management interventions for academic learning.
  • Responds with therapeutic flexibility to client's needs.
  • Responds with sensitivity to cultural and socio-economic issues of clients.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Psychology, or related discipline.
Certifications/Licenses
  • New Jersey State Certification Teacher of the Handicapped or Teacher of Students with Disabilities.
  • New Jersey State Certification Elementary Teacher, PK-3, K-5, K-6.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with emotionally disturbed children preferred. Previous experience with children (4- 21 years).

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day. Duties may involve running and playing active games with children and/or adolescents (ages 4-21 years). Following training must be physically capable of safely providing personal restraint to agitated children.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.
