Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Clinician II - Intake Clinician for the Outpatient Edison Department within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.The primary purpose of the Mental Health Clinician II - Intake Clinician is to serve as the senior mental health practitioner who provides lead functions for the program, to include screening of intakes and referrals, care coordination, ensuring completion of program specific documentation and/or comprehensive assessment and therapeutic intervention for the psychological and social needs of child and adolescent (ages 3-17 years) and/or adult individuals served (18 and over), including development of treatment plans, conducting individual, group, and family therapy, and providing case management. Assists with the provision of clinical supervision to licensing candidates as assigned.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Effectively contributes to and supports an environment that enhances the positive self-image of individuals served and their families and preserves their human dignity, right to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy and civil rights as observed by supervisor and with minimal complaints and positive feedback from peers, patients and their families.
  • Actively and enthusiastically participates in ensuring the smooth functioning and operation of the program, and participates in UBHC-wide meetings, performance improvement activities, committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Provides assessments and ongoing therapeutic services with flexibility, empathy and concern for individuals served based on sound clinical judgment as indicated by supervisory observation and feedback from individuals served, families and fellow team members.
  • In clinical programs, assesses individuals for mental health and substance use disorders, arrives at accurate DSM5 diagnosis by the end of the evaluation in consultation with team members, completes documentation and updates diagnosis when new information and clinical status warrant.
  • In community programs, acts as a liaison with referral source and community based services, coordinates and schedules intake appointments and outreaches, conducts and documents eligibility screenings and clinical assessments including rehabilitation needs assessments for program referrals and intakes, updates diagnosis when new information and clinical status warrant, maintains records and submits reports as required.
  • Completes clinically appropriate admission paperwork, assessments and evaluations, treatment and/or recovery plans, progress notes, transfer and termination/discharge summaries and instructions consistent with UBHC policy and program standards as indicated by periodic record review.
  • Formulates documentation in accordance with prescribed time frames as indicated by periodic record review.
  • Ensures that documentation meets Quality Improvement chart review content and regulatory standards.
  • Provides assigned lead functions for the department.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree in mental health discipline plus two (2) years post Master's experience in the mental health field including delivering psychotherapeutic services to the identified population, or a Doctorate Degree.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Independent license to practice as required by New Jersey state laws governing the discipline (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, LCADC, Licensed Psychologist).
  • Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands: Ability to speak clearly and write/type proficiently is essential. Ability to implement universal precautions and safety precautions. Extended sitting is required to provide treatment and prepare clinical documentation.

Work Environment: Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Subject to unpredictable situations and both medical and psychiatric crises. Possible exposure to patients exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens that require use of personal protective equipment. May be exposed to varying or extreme temperatures.
